New app Beta test

Just thought I’d start a thread for those of us testing the Beta version of the new MN app, to share initial impressions (as well as sharing feedback with MNHQ).

So far I love it! I love how light it is and that we don’t only have 4/5 dark backgrounds to choose from! I also like that we finally get to see the trending list. Will report back with further thoughts 🤓

Oh yes, I’ve actually just realised and reported this too. So annoying.
I’m having trouble bookmarking posts when I filter the op’s posts too.
I’ve found several other annoying glitches this morning.

Is anyone finding the app crashing now? It was fine this morning but I’ve just opened it 3 times in a row and as soon as it opens it crashes and closes

Thank you @Aparecium, @Bumply, @JoJothegerbil and @Ljufr. I've added all of your feedback, be it from here or submitted directly via TestFlight, to our list of things to review with the team. I'm sorry we aren't getting to everything immediately, we have a lot to work through at the moment.

@TinkerTiger I'm very sorry about this! Have you continued to have this issue throughout the day? Knowing if you were doing anything specific prior to it crashing is very useful. For example, was the app already open and you went to open it again and then it crashed? Or was it closed completely when you opened it and then it crashed?

I haven’t had much to comment on the last couple of updates as I didn’t really notice much difference but this is hella better 😊

Still niggles that new paragraph doesn’t default to a capital letter 🤦‍♀️and it’s still clunky changing username without a drop down but these are minor flaws.

I’m not. Still the frustratingly tiny posting window. Still the unnecessary reminder of who I am. Still having the post I’m quoting scrolling up and disappearing as I type, so I can’t refer back to it. Still the unnecessarily massive blue area at the top of the screen. Still cannot return to my typing after adding a photo, so have to remember to only add the photo after I’ve finished typing. Still can’t actually post with a photo.

Accidentally touched the at button, and the only way to get out of that screen was to choose a name and then delete it once I had returned to the posting screen. And cannot type the at sign, either, because the same thing happens.

At least I can now see four lines of my own typing. A fourfold improvement - whoopee.

Existing app still vastly more comfortable to use. Except when quoting, where this new app is slightly better.

I am posting in the Beta app, but shall have to go to the original app to add the photos. Because I still can’t add photos in this Beta app.

In the old app, @ brings up the list of names, but if you continue typing it disappears without disrupting the typing.

@Apareciumdid you try pulling the posting window up to fill the screen? I know it might be a pain to see what’s underneath but it gives a bit more space.
Also your keyboard looks a bit bigger than mine so not sure if that makes a difference.
I’ll screenshot and try to add a pic. Not sure if I’ve done that on the test site.
And I’ve added this sentence after I added the photo. Odd 🤔

Weird.
My post showed up without the pic at first. Only showed after I refreshed the screen. That could cause a bit of confusing double posting of photos.

I’m trying. There’s a little bar above, which implies I should be able to grab and pull up (or down), but it doesn’t do anything.

This has, however, led me to discover that you can scroll up and down just by pressing and dragging. But this only affects my own post, not the quoted post, which only shows 2 lines and can’t be scrolled through.

What phone are you using, @onitlikeacarbonnet? I use an iPhone SE, which has a relatively small screen. We could actually have the same size keyboard, but very different size screens.

I like the new app but when oh when are we going to be able to see PMs on it?

Or notifications??

Without these I’ll just continue using the web version, which is a shame as I like the app otherwise.

@Aparecium It’s an iphone13 (or maybe 12) so that’s possible.

Has anyone mentioned that when you get an email notification with a link to a thread, it opens on the website rather than the (old or new) app?

iIts definitely not as good an experience as the new app.

I’ve found another thing to moan about offer constructive criticism on. In the original app, you can copy paste text from previous posts into your post. Very useful when you want to draw attention to a specific section of a post, or to repeat the poster’s phrase.

Please incorporate that facility into the new app.

Yes, notifications are a MUST! They are a main feature of the website that has never been available, and is so useful

Yes I think I’d mentioned this somewhere on this thread too. It’s a very useful feature

I don’t know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, and I know it’s been a while since the app has been launched.

But is there no way to see notifications within the app? Am I missing something? I can’t see them myself. This is such a huge thing to be missing!
