I am being plagued by a Taylor Wimpey advert. It takes up the whole page and makes it impossible to scroll. Please get it removed or made smaller.

Huge adverts making site unusable

HebeMumsnet · 20/10/2024 21:17

Evening, everyone. We'll look into this asap. In the meantime, if anyone can send us a link to the ad itself or tell us where they were on the site when it appeared, that would be brilliant. Thank you.

JoMumsnet · 28/10/2024 11:55

Thanks for letting us know that this ad is cropping up again. We're sorry for the disruption it's causing and we're on the case.

JoMumsnet · 01/11/2024 11:03

Thanks for letting us know, @TinyTear. We've replied on the other thread about these ads and we're trying to implement a permanent block. In the meantime, sorry for the disruption they've been causing.

JoMumsnet · 01/11/2024 12:06

Just a further update to say that these ads should all be blocked by now, but please let us know if any new ones crop up.

Thanks again for your patience.

HebeMumsnet · 04/11/2024 10:27

Thanks, everyone. We're working to get these ads blocked again. Thanks for sharing the information about where you are spotting them. It's always helpful.

JoMumsnet · 07/11/2024 12:51

We're so sorry that these ads are still causing problems.

If anyone's able to post a screenshot of the Boots ad that's cropping up, that would be helpful, as would the URL if possible.

We can see that some of you have said that the ad's appeared on this very thread. Where else on the site is it showing? If you could also let us know which device and browser and which version of the site you're using, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

JoMumsnet · 08/11/2024 10:48

We believe we've blocked all of the Boots ads by now, but please let us know if any are still cropping up. Thank you.

LilyMumsnet · 11/11/2024 16:46

Hi all,

Thanks for being patient. We're still looking at the problem and will update as soon as we can. However, if there's a grey frame around the advert, then it means that it's a standard ad size and isn't an error.

LilyMumsnet · 11/11/2024 21:03

PaminaMozart · 11/11/2024 16:57

It's a filmed advert rather than a photo.

Thank you! If it happens again, would you mind grabbing the URL for us?

LilyMumsnet · 12/11/2024 14:28

PaminaMozart · 11/11/2024 16:55

Thank you, but I've posted screen shots!

Just now I'm getting the attached.

Sorry if you've already said but can you confirm your device and browser?

LilyMumsnet · 13/11/2024 13:58

Hi all

Thanks for your patience. We have an update here - we know it was a really frustrating issue, and we appreciate how much information you've all shared (both on this thread and via email).

We have released a permanent fix for this. It's a large fix for all issues relating to ad sizes, so there may be some teething problems. We're hoping this isn't the case, but we'd be grateful if you could keep us updated.

JoMumsnet · 15/11/2024 12:38

@SilenceInside thanks for alerting us to this pop-up and for providing the screenshot and URL (and to everyone else who's posted). We're taking a look and will be back with an update as soon as we can.

@PaminaMozart can we just check if you've seen the V-Tech ad again today? That one should be blocked by now but please let us know if it appears again.

JoMumsnet · 15/11/2024 13:21

Argh. Thanks for the screenshots. We're taking another look... (and sorry!)

HebeMumsnet · 18/11/2024 11:40

Mornning, everyone. We're still doing our best to sort this out but in the meantime, here's a bit more information which we hope might explain the situation better..

Mumsnet, as you probably know, is a free service and relies on ads. These ads are often served dynamically, based on users' interests or the page they are on at the time. Unfortunately, a small percentage of users are being served ads in an incorrect way, specifically on Desktop/Tablet and involving 'width to width' ads.

Although we supply the ads opportunities, we rely on buying tech to serve ads suited to the platform. These ads are meant for mobile environments, which means thhat instead of stretching width to width on a mobile device (no impact on viewing content) it stretches out of the Desktop side ads, covering the content.

We're currently working with an ad verification company that proactively blocks the majority of these issues, but there are still cases (like these) where they slip through certain routes and have an impact on user experience. When that happens, we reactively block ads based on URLs/advertiser name.

The manual process of finding the culprit and implementing blocks can be lengthy as we do not have a direct relationship with these advertisers. This is exacerbated due to having a small team that deals with this. However, we are looking at options to help speed up this process, change the setup and are hiring help to navigate these issues more effectively.

Unfortunately these are not quick fixes and for the moment we still rely on manual exclusions, so we still really appreciate as many details on the issues as possible from our users.

HebeMumsnet · 20/11/2024 10:35

Hi there @Puzzledandpissedoff,

Thanks for your message. Don't worry - our previous post about these large ads is not relevant to outright scammers - that's a different thing altogether. This is a breakdown of safeguards and something we are currently working through with the company that should be protecting us from these sorts of scam pop-ups.

HebeMumsnet · 20/11/2024 10:36

@NerdWhoEatsMedlar. Yes, we do use Google ads. They make up a smaller percentage of our ads compared to other websites, but they account for around 20-30% of our ads.

HebeMumsnet · 20/11/2024 10:37

And a big thank you to everyone else here letting us know about these large ads. It's very helpful. Flowers

BeckyAMumsnet · 23/11/2024 16:20

Hello and thank you for posting. The more information we have about the ad the better - if you're able to share screenshots, URLs and details of device and browser, it helps us identify the ad and figure out any potential problems.

@Zonder do you have an ad blocker switched on?

JoMumsnet · 29/11/2024 10:32

Hi @Zonder we're sorry you're still having problems with these blank ads. Please can you give us some details of the device and browser you're using so we can take a closer look? And is it specific threads that the ads are appearing on? If you can let us know where they're popping up, that will help us to track them down. Thank you.

JoMumsnet · 29/11/2024 12:48

Thanks, Zonder. We're taking a look now.

JoMumsnet · 06/12/2024 11:06

Hi again, we're sorry that these non-loading 'blank' ads are still causing problems for some of you.

@Thevelvelletes please can you let us know which device you're using? This seems to be a Google/Pixel issue so we just wanted to check if that's the case for you as well.

@Sewsew0 thanks for linking to the thread you were on when this last happened. Is it occurring in other topics as well or is it just this one thread that's the problem today?

JoMumsnet · 06/12/2024 12:03

Sewsew0 · 06/12/2024 11:55

I only noticed it on that one thread, hasn't happened on others since.

Thanks, @Sewsew0

BeckyAMumsnet · 16/12/2024 13:41

Thanks for continuing to flag these ads and we’re sorry for the inconvenience caused while they crawl all over your threads!

We’ve now identified several ads causing these issues and contacted our advertising partners to have them blocked. We’re also working to prevent similar issues in future by reviewing and restricting the use of expandable or intrusive ad formats on the site. This may take some time as we work through all the necessary adjustments with our partners.

If you encounter any other ads like this, it would be really helpful if you could provide the following details (seasoned site stuffers know the drill but just in case):
A screenshot of the advert.
The URL the advert redirects to (if clicked).
The device and browser you’re using.

This information allows us to quickly locate and block the offending ads. Thanks again for your patience and understanding. We really do appreciate you letting us know about this.

HebeMumsnet · 15/01/2025 10:45

Thanks for letting us know @AllHisCaterpillarFriends . We'll look into this right now.

HebeMumsnet · 15/01/2025 12:08

@AllHisCaterpillarFriends We think we've tweaked something here. Can you let us know if you have this problem again? Thanks!
