Any progress on making it impossible to quote the opening post?

I seem to remember this was possibly in the works. It’s so frustrating when someone posts a long opening post and then people quote it!

OP posts:

I don’t mind it now - it’s quite good at weeding out the idiots.

If someone quotes the whole huge post near the start of the thread I always just scroll and don’t read, it’s always the case that the poster will just be saying something completely inane.

*Have you considered the fact people can simply copy, paste and bold any opening post if MN disable quote OP function?

Not worth disabling it, imo*

I've been on MN for two decades and I haven't once seen a poster copy and paste the op in the first reply. Nor have I seen poster after poster cutting and pasting the opening post.

This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines - previously banned poster.

No, because they can simply press quote currently so no need to do it. But if this function of quoting OP is removed, posters may well choose to do that instead.

No, because it's a relatively new feature and before it was introduced nobody cut and pasted the op n the first reply and posters did not repeatedly cut and paste the OP before replying. Confused

And like I said upthread, not everyone is using a device capable of it.

I don't believe a Chromebook doesn't have a copy and paste function.

Morning, everyone. When we changed Talk fairly recently, users were in favour of making the OP quotable, so that's why we did it, just to fill you in on the background. So it's unlikely we would reverse this at this stage.

However, we are still considering the possibility of making the OP quote collapsible. It needs some careful consideration as it's not quite as simple a job as it might sound but we're giving it lots of thought. It's good to hear people's feedback on it as an idea though, while we're looking into the various possibilities so please do add your thoughts here and we'll keep reading.
