MN and the GE - invasion of "suspect" posters - does MN have a plan?

cakeorwine · 22/05/2024 18:08

I suspect we will be seeing a lot of new posters. Posting in single issues. Possibly not being truthful, spreading misinformation and trying to manipulate thinking.

Does MN have any kind of a plan around this?

I think they often close the site for new registrations at some point

OkieSkies · 22/05/2024 18:28

They seem to allow misinformation about other things, so I wouldn’t hold your breath.

LilyMumsnet · 22/05/2024 19:09

Hi OP

We're not able to comment on this because we don't want to give trolls and troublemakers a heads up... but as ever, please do report anything concerning to us and we will take a look.

Imo there’s already been an influx of <intelligible> posting shit advice or criticism in an effort to make MN a less pleasant place

Maybe political trolls will have a wider range of stupid takes to laugh at

I’ve been getting bored of the others 👻

Astroturfers have been around as long as Mumsnet has. And so have posters being untruthful, spreading misinformation and trying to manipulate thinking.

Very often all at the same time.

misscockerspaniel · 23/05/2024 07:52

Please will MN set up a board for the general election and use it for relevant threads on chat and AIBU which is already filling up with posts originating from political party bots/activists etc.

ValueAddedTaxonomy · 23/05/2024 08:04

I feel sorry for MNHQ. There are SO many suspicious OPs I don't see how they can keep up. There seems to be a strategy among spammers to start a lot of threads that are just pure trivial garbage, presumably in the hope that among this barrage of nonsense they can slip through the minority of spam threads that actually further their purpose.
The trivial garbage threads are so hard to report - because all you can say in the report tool is that the opening post is bizarrely stupid, which doesn't feel very compelling. So I just don't report most threads that look dodgy.
It is starting to make the site feel very much less engaging. And I don't know what MN can do about it. It is horrible to think of such a brain-dead onslaught of disinformation and manipulation. Especially when a significant number of these threads are hateful.
The site is very much different from just a few years ago.

BIWI · 23/05/2024 09:05

There was a poster just the other day doing just that @ValueAddedTaxonomy - always a give away when someone starts a thread with a question, and then never comes back. I always search those names, and if I'm still suspicious I'll report them. I'm sure MNHQ must groan when they see my name in their in box! (But they tell us they love reports, so ... )

Janome9300 · 23/05/2024 11:00

I think I will probably take a break from mumsnet over the period. I get so sucked in by the bullshit threads about school fees or people the OP knows who claim loads of benefits.

cakeorwine · 24/05/2024 13:51

Not doing a good job so far, are we?

OP posts:
IncompleteSenten · 24/05/2024 14:01

It's already started.
The benefits threads and the disability threads - especially the revolting "we can't afford all these disableds with their disabled needs, just disabling all over the place like disableds do" threads.

There have been lots of what I believe are testing the water threads for a while now.

KneelYouCoward · 25/05/2024 08:12

You know irl I actually love people coming out with that shit Incomplete

Let’s me know quick, clear & easy that the person is a dickhead & to limit or avoid interaction

not really a similar upside on MN with name-changing etc though

maybe I should retract my earlier flippancy of a change of troll being akin to a rest, it’s more ‘different topic but same shit’

I do not envy the mods at all in the coming months

hopefully they’ll manage a quick booze cruise this bank holiday & be able to stock up on gin

(& a bun run for tunnocks 😂)
