Why zap when you can lock??????

It really is very very annoying when you're reading/contributing to a thread and the thread gets zapped instead of being locked to add more comments to it.

For example, recently I was reading and contributing to the thread where the OP of that thread had put a stop to giving lifts to her colleague.

This is the one I mean:

The thread goes POOF! in a second due to troll hunters. Instead of leaving the thread and just deleting the troll posts (and possibly banning the troll hunters for a time as that isn't permitted according to the explanation of why the thread is gone) the thread could have been locked so that no one could add any further posts.

Why, Mumsnet Admins, do you pull so many threads and discussions instead of locking them? You have the capabilities to do either but it comes across as the first choice is to pull the thread but never to lock it. Why is that?? It seems very drastic to pull the thread instead of locking it.

I posted a query asking if it would be possible for MN Admins to specify which rule someone has broken in the explanation if a thread gets pulled and in fairness, the one above does have an explanation but did you have to pull it? Really?
(This is the thread where I asked if the actual rule broken could be included in the explanation where a post gets pulled:

Hello @LookItsMeAgain on this particular thread, the OP requested we take it down because practically every other post was calling her a troll. We quite understand her reasons.

We take your point though that some threads would be better locked than zapped. If you think we've been hasty over deleting something, do drop us a line.

Hi there @LookItsMeAgain. If we recall, the whole thing sort of just subsided on that thread. Having been a bit frosty with the OP, the passenger calmed down after the OP cleared the air with her and that was it really. Hope that fills you in a bit.
