I'm still campaigning for a 'chicken' topic - I think MNHQ have said it is too much of a 'minority' topic. But, there seem to be loads of us. So please sign in so I can see how many there are! Thank you!

I am plannign to kill a few, eat two and throw the rest around.

ProfYaffle · 17/03/2008 14:39

I don't have chickens yet but have some on order, due to arrive mid April. Our henhouse is being made by the same chap who made Jamie Oliver's coop

CluckyTheChicken · 17/03/2008 14:39

Oi, Fox. Fuck off

Ripeberry · 17/03/2008 14:40

Fluffy was a white silkie hen. They are great as a pet, they are a bit unusuall as they have an extra toe, their skin is dark and they have dark eyes.
If you want a silkie, get a silkie cockerel, they hare lovely blue patches by their ears and they seem to mate with any size chicken.
We have a young hen, who was laid by a buff orpington hen and brought up by our Maran hen...don't ask.
But she looks so different, medium sized with dark eyes, brown/red feathers and 5 toes. One in a million.

CluckyTheChicken · 17/03/2008 14:46

All my opringtons are buff.

handlemecarefully · 17/03/2008 14:52

Yes - and I'd like a chicken topic

handlemecarefully · 17/03/2008 14:53

Why don't you (since you are campaigning) search old topics on chickens and note the contributors, and then CAT them to ask them to sign into this thread

PrincessPeaHead has chickens, so does D of Norksbride.......

geekgirl · 17/03/2008 14:58

I am a keen chicken keeper - have been since I was 6.

although am currently chicken-less due to fox attack a week ago - the bloody thing took all my 7 chickens - 4 silkies (3 golden and one partridge coloured), 1 faverolle (the silliest and friendliest chicken ever ), 1 cream legbar and 1 silver sussex.

Got someone coming this week who'll give me a quote for a fully enclosed foox-proof run and shall start again...

Looking forward to the excitement of poultry auctions, anyway.

geekgirl · 17/03/2008 14:58

(and yes, would like a chicken topic!)

handlemecarefully · 17/03/2008 14:58

That's a shame geekgirl

PrincessPeaHead · 17/03/2008 15:04

I have chickens
I also have foxes
I will have more chickens on wed (hopefully) if my incubator does its stuff!

zog · 17/03/2008 15:08

I haven't got chickens but am hoping to in the future. Like TortoiseSHELL's idea of three separate topics.

GentleOtter · 17/03/2008 15:29

TORTOISESHELL !!!!XXXXXX

tortoiseSHELL · 17/03/2008 16:10

HUrrah for escaping from ethical living!

It could just go under 'livestock' in Homes and Gardens you know, then would encompass chickens, ducks, pigs, goats, etc etc etc.

OP posts:
GentleOtter · 17/03/2008 16:22

Goats! Does anyone else have goats? We are just awaiting our little British Saanen milker to keep our darling 11year old goat company.
We have geese and ducks too and I'm on the lookout for Norfolk Black turkey eggs for the incubator.

hermionegrangerat34 · 17/03/2008 16:27

I do! Only 4 (and only one of them seems to be laying eggs which wasn't quite the plan...). But was thinking about posting about how to stop them digging up my plants (I know, pointless...) so think topic would be good!

ingles2 · 17/03/2008 16:31

I've got chickens and had ducks too until the fox scoffed them all

BigBadMouse · 17/03/2008 16:49

Yes we have chooks here.

tortoiseSHELL · 17/03/2008 16:50

This thread is slightly superfluous now, since MNHQ are going to give us a topic but so far we have...

ingles - about your ducks. I'd love ducks, but we REALLY REALLY REALLY don't have room! (Only have smallish urban garden so even the chickens is pushing it!

OP posts:
Mercy · 17/03/2008 16:52

I've got one in the freezer!

No, seriously we started with 2 chicks last year (bantams of some sort) but they both turned out to be boys so we had to get rid. Plus we realised we didn't really have enough room for them
