I keep getting Dutch and German adverts at the side of the page

Often with pictures of oil tankers or wind turbines. Any idea why? I don’t speak German or Dutch so the advertising message is lost on me. I haven’t been googling anything related to these items!

Thanks for flagging this. How long has it been happening? And are all the adverts you're seeing in Dutch or German, or just occasional ones?

Morning, everyone. Thanks for the further info. We're looking at this now. If anyone else is seeing foreign langauge ads, do let us know what they are and where they're appearing.

A url for the page you were on when they popped up and a screenshot of the ads would be really helpful if possible.

Thanks very much for providing that screenshot, @GuitarGeorgina If there's any chance you can grab the URL next time the ad crops up, that would be really useful too. Just click the advert whilst your WiFi is off and then copy the URL (so the URL will load even though the site won't).

We just had a thought about this - if anyone is still getting these ads could you try clearing your cookies? It might be that you're being retargeted based on previous search history. Let us know if that seems to help.

Hi again @GuitarGeorgina (and others). Sorry the cookies clear didn't work. That does, at least, tell us that the issue probably isn't specific to an ad campaign, though.

Unfortunately that means this probably isn't something we can solve at our end but what you can do is hit "Hide ad" and mark it as "not relevant". Eventually the ads should get a signal to stop showing.

That said it would also be a good idea, to check the following if you haven't done so already:

  • Make sure your browser, device or app are updated (where applicable)
  • Check IP Address looks accurate
  • If the above is not accurate then you might need to check if there is a VPN or Wifi settings issue.

Hopefully that will sort the issue in time.
