If you look at the OP's posts on this thread it looks like she may have routinely used "Reply" rather than "Quote" when responding to people. However, she hasn't @-mentioned the person she is responding to, which makes her replies very confusing: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/education/4908580-headteacher-used-a-biscuit-in-maths-and-tried-to-feed-our-coeliac-daughter-and-when-told-not-to-laughed-about-it.

I'm guessing she is an inexperienced mumsnetter, but she's not the only one. What is the point of the "Reply" button if it isn't obvious who the reply is aimed at? Surely the person being responded to should be automatically tagged so that it's clear?

I think this is something that is not a feature on all versions of MN.

I'd assume OP is not on the desktop site, which does not have it. And hasn't realised from earlier replies that it's not the same for everyone

The lack of consistency between desktop, mobile and the app is very frustrating from a UX point of view.

Top tip for MNHQ - paying a service designer would really help with this stuff. It feels like they are all designed completely separately as if they aren’t all MN.

It would make more sense to put the 'quote' button there instead.

Yes that would make a lot more sense because even if pressing the reply button tagged the poster, the reply would not make any sense because you would not know what the original poster was saying?.

The quote button is hidden so people don't know it is there.

MyCircumference · 01/10/2023 20:43

i like the add button, and the quote and the edit and i dont have the reply button.

MoralOrLegal · 01/10/2023 20:43

I'm pretty sure that the desktop version used to have it? Unless I'm confused. It doesn't now, though. (See attached.)

so what is the "add message" button for? and what is the "save" button for??

I don't have an " add message"

CheersToMe · 01/10/2023 20:47

This is what the iPhone app looks like.
No 'thanks' but we have 'reply' - has that been re-named from 'add post'? Or has is always been 'reply'?

And 'quote' is in the side swipe.

I didn't realise there were such different options depending on if you use desktop, android, iphone or app - I wonder why they don't all have the same buttons.

Ooh? What does 'filter' do?

IncomingTraffic · 01/10/2023 21:23

On mobile, there’s add message on the thread nav bar and reply in the post nav bar.

No side swipes.

Honestly MNHQ, consistency would really help. And launching features in a general way across everything. Not on mobile and maybe desktop (but not quite consistently) and then deciding to do something with the app a couple of months later.

Morning, everyone. Thanks for flagging this. We've been making notes about this issue and are going to look at more consistency here. We're not completely sure how that will look at the moment but once we've worked it out and a change is imminent we'll post and let you all know.

'Filter' will show you all the posts by the OP.

Saves wasting time reading several hundred posts (all giving the same advice) when the OP hasn't come back to the thread.

Aah, thanks, does the same as 'see all' on mobile site.

This button at the top allows filter by poster, but only the OP if you don't have premium.

Pretty much every thread I look at now has an OP replying nonsense because whoever they’re responding to hasn’t been tagged or quoted, which you would assume would happen if you clicked ‘reply’/‘add message’ on each reply. It makes threads pointless and unreadable.

Oh right, it's a premium thing!
