How to swear politely on MN

mnmnddddd · 29/06/2023 06:42

I tried to post something today that included something like "they would have said qwerty you".
Rather than "qwerty" I used four asterisks. I understand some people are uncomfortable with profanity but, for me, the F word was entirely apropriate.
The software seems to have removed the asterisks completely and the phrase appeared as "they would have said you" which is just confusing as a sentence.
How are we supposed to say something like this whilst not offending people and breaking the rules?

You're allowed to say fuck here.

Binbonboomf · 29/06/2023 06:43

Just say fuck? 🤔

Augend23 · 29/06/2023 06:44

You can just swear. Mumsnet lets you say anything from bloody hell to motherfucker with no censorship required.

whataboutme77 · 29/06/2023 06:46

I thought we were allowed to swear on Mumsnet, have the rules changed?

KnitMePurlMe · 29/06/2023 06:48

You’re allowed to swear - as long as you’re not swearing at a named individual as that can be seen as an abusive post.

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 29/06/2023 06:52

Savour it Roy Kent style fuuuuuuuck

mnmnddddd · 29/06/2023 06:57

Now I'm just fucking confused. If I can say fuck, why the fuck do four asterisks get edited out when I don't want to fucking say it?
(Ooh ... that felt good. Like a therapeutic scream.)

@whataboutme77 Who's Roy Kent?

It’s the formatting since The Latest Big Change.

Asterisks mean empty text in some circs.

EauNeu · 29/06/2023 07:01

Because asterisks are a special character on here that mean 'put the next but in bold until I do another asterisk'

mnmnddddd · 29/06/2023 07:01

@CocoLePewter The Last Big Change? Has MN gone through the menopause?

KateyCuckoo · 29/06/2023 07:01

Asterisks are used to bold the words in between them. If no words, then it just shows as empty.

musixa · 29/06/2023 07:01

Asterisks are part of the formatting code on here, which is why they don't work to express profanities. As pps have said, there's no taboo here on swearing. But if you're personally uncomfortable you could use other random characters - people would get the drift if you typed 'f%^k' or fxxk' for example.

mnmnddddd · 29/06/2023 07:03

@EauNeu Ah. Now that makes more sense. It confused the asterisk out of me.

This all reminds me of an episode of Battlestar Galactica when, in a fit of rage and needing sexual release, Starbuck screamed at a crew-mate "just frack me!" Comedy gold.

@whataboutme77 Who's Roy Kent?

He's a character from Ted Lasso apparently, I had to Google it.

Hello @mnmnddddd you're quite welcome to swear so long as it's not a personal attack. The asterisk on MN is code to make things bold like this

If you really can't bring yourself to then adding asterisk within the word will work if it's just the one word. Eg: F**k.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 01/07/2023 17:52

T**t

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 01/07/2023 17:52
