New feature - posting GIFs

Oprah Hand Outs GIF

Hello everyone.

Following a number of suggestions, we’re introducing a GIF library for the Talk boards - it’s at the bottom of your message box, beside the image button.

We know that GIFs can be a somewhat divisive subject and despite reports that the moving image files are now so old that they’re the internet equivalent to cave paintings (shout out to everyone who remembers the days Netflix came in the post), we think it’ll be a useful addition when words just aren't enough. For anyone concerned that this is the beginning of a slide towards intellectual oblivion, at this stage you won’t be able to add a GIF without also adding text to your post and you can only post one GIF at a time.

Posting GIFs is currently exclusive to the desktop and mobile website but they will still be visible in the apps. iOS is live now and you'll see them in Android in the next few weeks.

This is our first stab at this - so please bear with us while we adapt it to suit. As always, we’d very much appreciate your feedback, good and bad.

So the GIFS are not visible on the app.
Rendering most posts redundant.
👍🏻

Hi @redspottedmug,

It looks like your app hasn’t automatically updated to the latest version. You should be able to update it manually by visiting the App Store and searching for ‘Mumsnet Talk’ and clicking update.

Apologies, it looks like there’s a slight lag between us releasing the latest version and some devices updating it automatically!

Oooooooo

butterfliedtwo · 08/03/2023 13:48

I just love how you pull out this nonsense, but an edit function is completely unreasonable to ask for.

Oh My God Wow GIF

Oooooooooòooooooh

@AmeliaPMumsnet Why do you hate app users so much? Still waiting to be able to quote a quoted post 🙄

As someone who doesn't use computers often and finds the app much more accessible in terms of ease of reading and use, it's starting to feel ableist that only those who can read smaller writing on their phones get access to new features

ThatsRoughBuddy · 08/03/2023 14:14

I do love a good gif occasionally but if they don’t stop automatically after a bit then they're hellish. All that repetitive movement when you’re trying to read text is horrible and makes me feel seasick.

I know right.

I've updated the app and now have this:

Just buffering 😆

I find it weird that MN supports its own app
so poorly.

You’d think they’d want to promote use of their app, not always make it a second class user experience.

jeffgoldblum · 08/03/2023 14:52

I'm not risking in update ! , last time it wiped all my bookmarks .

Ah, Mumsnet, you are just on fire recently. What with this and keeping the name on each thread. I'm loving you all. ❤

harry potter hello GIF

Oh MNHQ! You're on a roll! First being able to use original name on a thread (without searching for it or accidentally posting with two names), now this????!!!

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 08/03/2023 22:11

Just me then that hates it then. I like MN as it isn't like everywhere else.

bizzywiththefizzy · 08/03/2023 22:20

I do believe certain posters will just fill up threads with this nonsense .
So annoying .

LangClegsInSpace · 08/03/2023 22:57

Nobody fills up threads with images (unless it's 'show me your cat' or something) so why would they fill up threads with gifs?

Maybe it would help if there was a setting so people can choose for gifs to not play automatically?

Not just you. I'm Autistic and find the movement of gifs really overwhelming. I usually scroll on Mumsnet as a way to self-soothe and switch off, so this will possibly make the site unusable for me now. Disappointing.

good for you yes GIF by Brimstone (The Grindhouse Radio, Hound Comics)

Seems to be quite a range of these things.

maximist · 08/03/2023 23:18

I'll hate this, I can't read text if anything is moving on the page. Is there a way to automatically hide all gifs? I use the iOS app.

Retractable · 09/03/2023 19:03

Do you think, given that moving images can cause accessibility issues, it might be worth offering an option for users to opt out of GIFs in the settings?

redspottedmug · 09/03/2023 22:03

Damn, my app seems to have updated and I can see the hideous gifs.

FGSWhatNow · 09/03/2023 22:08

GIFs? Seriously? Please no.

YaWeeSkitter · 09/03/2023 22:54

I really fail to see how this is an improvement to the site? Surely 20+ years of managing fine without Gifs , with a steady core of users and lots of calls from them for an edit function tells you that this isnt the update we were asking for.
I dont have any issues with moving images per se but they take up too much room for me to scroll easily while reading in a recumbant position.
