does Mumsnet count?

Does mumsnetting for hours and hours count with a capped ADSL service?

AM thinking of getting a 1 GB capped service

BUT I don't want to be restricted with mumsnet

please help

I am about as technical as a paperclip, but I have a feeling that it's the limit to what you can actually download rather than how long you spend online.
A bit like you can spend as long as you like in the library but you can only take out 2 books, sort of thing.
At least, I think ...

Kanga, if you're still there, I'm going to get dh to do his geeky stuff as he knows more about it than me (which probably isn't a lot Smile).

OK - here he is ...

We are on Wanadoo which gives 2GB a month. What this means is the amount of information you either take from or send to the system must be less than 2GB (1GB is approx 1,000,000,000 bytes) if you look at Wanadoo.co.uk hompage and follow some links they have a guide as to what this typically means. BT broadband web site also have a guide. As yet Wanadoo have not actually started limiting the use to 1GB so I don't know how much I (or more likely DW) are using. ( I am now a battered DH). The icon on the bottom of your screen that shows the the two computers will give you some idea of the amount of stuff you have used if you hold the cursor over it. Hope this is of some use , there are probalbly others out there who can explain it better.

You do still download when you read/refresh the screen/add comments on MN, by the way. I have sent 24 million bytes today, simply in MNing and checking my email Shock

BUT what does it mean

What about mumsnet?

I do not want to be worrying about it

does mumsnet 24/7 use it all up?

The received bit is how much you have downloaded today simply from accessing the websites you have accessed, and that is what you need to be totalling less than 1GB. As 1GB is a thousand million bytes, I think you'd be hard pushed to download all of that just from accessing MN! If you have a look at the CBeebies games and so on that you're interested in using, they usually show how many bytes they are to download. Would you consider going to a package with a higher capacity?

What would happen if I got to the limit?

Does the computer not work?

I can rent 1 GB extra for £2.99

but that seems a bit daft not to go for 5 GB.

What do you think?

If you got to the limit then you wouldn't be able to download any more - I assume your internet access would be blocked. I would think that's highly unlikely with 5GB though.

well I am paying for 150 things {3X dial up} £15.99 I think.

BUT during the day it keeps disconnecting

In evening and weekends it works.

KangaSanta - you are quite unlikely to go over 1Gb a day with normal surfing, even if you do look at quite a lot of pitures (most pics are around 40kb which means you'd have to see around 25,000 of them to reach your limit). Text, as on mumsnet, does count but it is tiny.

Depending on what the price difference is, i think I'd go for 1Gb the capped service. In the unlikely event that you went over on any one day, afaik it stops working until the next day.

Just noticed your usage (9something bytes received.) That's less than a Mb - a Gb is a lot.

Seriously, the only people who need more are people who download things a lot (whether programmes, music, or whatever) and people who play online 3d type games.

I had only just got a connection again

It now says 1, 641,720 sent

7,170,937 received

If it is a day then perhaps I will go for 1 GB

Kanga, do check with the service provider if it's a day - our 2GB is per month, not per day.
