The Assisted Dying thread is NOT about a petition

It should not have been moved, it's a survey and not a petition.

Someone must have complained. A lot of people on MN are very anti AS.

Adviceneeded200 · 31/12/2022 15:00

I'm "on the fence" in that I don't agree with it unless they can be sure to protect the vulnerable. Otherwise, in theory, I would be in favour.

The survey allowed me to express that view.

anyolddinosaur · 31/12/2022 15:18

This is not about the merits, or otherwise of assisted dying - it's about Mumsnet deciding to move a survey into the petitions section of the site. That's an area far fewer people will look at. So someone at mumsnet has decided they dont like assisted dying and wish to prevent other people learning about the consultation. That's depriving people of a democratic right.

It's "petitions and activism" so it is the right place for it. That said, they don't bother moving the billions of threads in AIBU that shouldn't be there.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2022 15:41

Keep bumping it so it appears in Active conversations.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/12/2022 15:43

I think surveys should go in the petitions & activism topic.

Otherwise AIBU and Chat would be stuffed to the rafters with them.

UsingChangeofName · 31/12/2022 16:03

It did seem an odd move.
As you say, no-one was being asked to sign a petition.
People are being asked to express their opinions, in the hope that more and more people respond to the survey, so decisions might begin to reflect society's thinking.
It is a valid point that MNHQ don't move all the things out of AIBU where they are not asking if they ABU.

I doubt many people would see things that are in 'petitions' so the opportunity to highlight to people the fact they can offer their opinions on this important debate is then lost.

frylite · 31/12/2022 16:06

It's not just petitions though?

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 31/12/2022 16:11

A consultation for citizens to give open responses on a social issue is not a petition or activism, IMO. It is consultation.

It was inviting responses, not advocating or lobbying.

anyolddinosaur · 01/01/2023 12:35

The thread is about a consultation on a matter of importance to everyone. It encourages people to respond, whether they agree with AD or not. Mumsnet apparently doesnt like people expressing a view on assisted dying.

There have been other consultations I have seen which haven't been moved into that area. People who oppose and support assisted dying are equally able to give their views. I don't know why it was moved either.

A survey of this kind is a form of activism, so I think it's in the right place

I agree with this. It's a government consultation, not a petition and not 'activism'.

A survey of this kind is a form of activism, so I think it's in the right place

activism
/ˈaktɪvɪz(ə)m/
noun
the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.

The consultation gives people an equal chance to either support current legislation or else say what their concerns around the issue are. It is the exact opposite dynamic of a petition or activism which is lobbying for a particular pov or action.

Luckydip1 · 01/01/2023 17:47

You can Google the new survey, I have just completed it, so I have had my say. According to a recent survey 75% of the general public are pro but only 35% of MPs which would explain why nothing has happened.

Samcro · 01/01/2023 17:53

It’s still on mn
surveys should be in the appropriate topic

Krakenwakes · 01/01/2023 17:56

Where is it? I can’t find it.

Suzi888 · 01/01/2023 17:57

I’d like to view it too.

I've just completed the survey - found the assisted dying thread by accident, so totally agree - this is too important a discussion ( and that's what it is) to hide away.
The irony is, the questionnaire is balanced - anyone against assisted dying has as much input as those in favour.

CousinKrispy · 01/01/2023 18:59

Where the heck is the petitions section anyway??

Thank you for the link to the survey, which is in fact very balanced.

LangClegsInSpace · 01/01/2023 20:09

Has the thread in chat been deleted as well?

It's completely gone from TIO and I'm getting a 404 error.

This is a government consultation seeking all views from the public. It's not a petition or an activist campaign. Even FWR discussion around government consultations is not treated like this. Please reinstate the thread.

That was my thread @LangClegsInSpace and I'm getting the same result!
