I dont think they can release unused names out into the wild. Imagine a poster who posts something really controversial, or trivial, under a once only pseudonym, and 3 months later somebody unsuspecting wants that name, registers under it and goes about their merry way thinking mn is a bizarre place with all the references to lesbian threesomes, bottom surgery, or fanny farting, etc she has had!

We did "release" some nicknames (makes us sound like a wildlife sanctuary last year for Mile for Maude but not sure if we have any plans to do this again.
