Constantly having to consent to cookies

amusedbush · 16/07/2022 11:18

For the past few days, every single time I click a link, open a thread or refresh a page on MN I get a huge pop-up asking me to accept cookies. I always click yes but it keeps happening, and sometimes it breaks (the box still covers my screen but it just shows an error message at the top) and I have to keep reloading the page until it's fixed.

It's a total pain but I don't know if it's a problem with the site or my browser. I'm using Safari version 16.0 but I've gone into the settings and the specific "settings for mumsnet.com" option and I can't see any reason that it's not saving my cookie consent.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 16/07/2022 12:09

Hi @amusedbush we’ve changed our Consent Management Platform to one which allows you to “reject all” cookies rather than having to go through them one by one. For a small number of users this has resulted in them being asked to consent on every page they visit. Please follow the instructions below and the consent pop up should stop appearing once you've reselected your preferences.

iPhone & iPad
Navigate to your settings
Click on ‘Safari’
Scroll to the bottom and choose ‘Advanced’
Click on ‘Website Data’
Type ‘Mumsnet' into the search box
Swipe left on ‘Mumsnet’ and choose ‘Delete’

Macs
Open your Safari preferences
Click ‘Privacy’
Click ‘Manage Website Data’
Type ‘Mumsnet' into the search box
Click on ‘Mumsnet.com’ and choose ‘Remove’
Click ‘Done'

Hi OP

We're really sorry about that.
Wondering if it's due to the issues on site yesterday.
Please could you clear your cache and then re-do the instructions above? This should hopefully clear it up.

Hi @LilyMumsnet , I have now tried that and it hasn't worked. It's just constant and it's such a pain - if I click "back" on the browser, the pop up appears again but as a white box with an "access denied" error message and the whole browser freezes.

Could you possibly grab us a screenshot of that error next time it happens?

LilyMumsnet · 02/08/2022 19:25

Thanks so much, OP.

Are you able to try logging in with a different browser to see if the issue exists on that one? We're a bit lost on this one as generally, a good cache/cookie clear tends to resolve this. Did you clear your cookies as well?

LilyMumsnet · 02/08/2022 20:20

That's completely understandable.

We're struggling to replicate and this seems to be an isolated case at the moment so please do bear with us. We will continue trying to get to the bottom of it but we don't have any more suggestions right now. Really sorry about this. Flowers

Morning, everyone.

For those finding this has consent issue has only been an issue after recently updating iOS, we think we’ve located the problem and it may be linked to the recent updates for some users. We’ve escalated this with the appropriate external agencies who are looking into it asap. As soon as we know more we'll let you know but hopefully it will be sorted soon.

For everyone else still experiencing the general cookies consent problem, as a temporary workaround, we’ve found that on Safari, on both mobile and desktop, users aren’t being asked to repeatedly consent to cookies if they access Mumsnet via a private/incognito tab. You should be able to open one of these by following these intructions:

Macbook (Safari):
Open Safari
Go to File dropdown at the top of the screen
Select New Private Window
Search for mumsnet.com

iPhone (Safari):
Open Safari
Select the tabs icon at the bottom of the screen
Click on the drop down arrow in the middle of the bar at the bottom of the screen
Select Private
Select Done
Search for mumsnet.com

You will be asked to consent to cookies and will need to log into your account again. You should then be able to browse without issues though.

We appreciate this is far from ideal, but hopefully it's a workaround until it's sorted. We’re still looking into this all urgently to get a proper fix and we’ll update as soon as you can use normal tabs again to let you know.

Thanks again, everyone, for your patience here. Flowers

Hi there @Myotherdogsaballboy ,

This sounds like it could be to do with the size of the threads. Could you customise the number of posts you see per page down to 25 or 50? We're finding that on long threads, people who have their posts per page set to 1,000 are having trouble with the screen freezing. You can do this in 'My mumsnet' at the top right hand side of the screen. Just shout if you need any further help doing this though.
