Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Is the fact that the full op's first post appears in full on every page of the thread on the list? I'm on android or my laptop and I used to only see the full message on the first page then not again on subsequent pages. This is great when the first post is a long one as now I have to scroll and scroll past the first message on every page.

Shannith · 23/04/2022 09:57

The app keeps kicking me out - on iOS latest version

specifically - when I try to flip a thread to see to the newest post

or indeed scroll through a long running (800+) posts to get to the last post

Won’t let me post images at all

I’ve logged out/logged back in - no change
delted the app and redownloaded - no change

Shannith · 23/04/2022 10:00

Yesterday I was wondering what all the fuss was about - today - so bad!!

Poor load and UX testing - I do a bit of this in my job and heads would be rolling! Sorry MNHQ but it’s really obvious that this is a huge traffic site with low margin and therefore low staff/tech stack/testing capacity.

it’s a shame and I feel your pain but some of the issues are pretty basic stuff, not niche user requests/wants.

I'm on used to only show the current threads I was commenting on now I can see every thread I've ever posted on even if no one has posted for months. I would rather not see all of them just the current active ones

(Controversial!) I like this change. It means long-running 'chat' type threads don't drop off your radar if you happen not to post for a few days. If you don't want that, you can sort them by 'date posted new to old' so only the most recent ones you've posted on appear on the first page.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/04/2022 15:15

Images: getting really faint white rectangles where images shoul appear.

Images take up to a minute to load, appear randomly when you've moved on down the thread, will not disappear. Click and nothing happens for a long while (tens of seconds)

Bookmarks are not responding to being clicked for several seconds or at all.

@mnhq same problem here

DappledThings · 23/04/2022 15:48

The search is awful. Having a slide bar for dates means if you want to only see anything from a short time ago you have to move the slider so far to the side that a minute movement totally changes the date. Needs to be an option to enter dates again.

Also when I do have that set then click into one search result then back it resets the sate slider. Really annoying.

beastlyslumber · 23/04/2022 16:01

How is there STILL no working notifications? That's crazy

LangClegsInSpace · 23/04/2022 16:24

Desktop website, Firefox, Windows 10.

Search is not finding all results

I tested this by searching for @BlackeyedSusan's post on this page. Search reckons she has posted 6 times on Site Stuff between 11/09/13 and 20/04/22. None of them are her post today - 23/04/2022 15:15 (it won't let me bookmark it!). The slider will not go past 20/04/22.

I’m missing some of my Watched Threads

Sexual technics on Dadsnet has been on my watch list for years and years.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/dadsnet/549019-sexual-technics

If I go on the thread I get an 'Unwatch thread' button, so it looks like I'm still watching it. But if I go on 'I'm watching' it's not there. I only have 4 threads showing on that page, I think I was watching a few more than that.

Formatting issue - random italics

Occasionally a whole page or part of a page turns to italic text. The bottom half of this page is doing that for me:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4532477-To-feel-despondent-about-feminism?page=13

No option to expand the text box for writing posts

Have to type everything in a little letterbox which is very annoying.

00100001 · 23/04/2022 17:08

Pahahahahaha who's great idea was it to have slider for TWENTY TWO YEARS of dates??? 😂

p.s. still can't delete your emojis 😐

Me too. It seems to be doing it mainly on Watched threads, rather than anywhere else

Specifically today, on the fantastic parking thread! I'm going mad as I can't get to the end or see all OP's posts as it just crashes.

Davros · 23/04/2022 23:50

I'm still having big problems. When I'm logged in on the app or website (premium member) I get NO threads at all showing under numerous topics including AIBU, Chat and many others and haven't for days. Some are fine. If I use the website without logging in, it's all there. I'm very fed up. I’ve logged out/logged back in and deleted the app and redownloaded but it's the same

Davros · 23/04/2022 23:52

And now the ones that don't load have now disappeared completely. So no AIBU etc appearing at all, never mind any content

Celendine · 24/04/2022 00:51

I'm having trouble posting on the Android app. Tried un install and reinstall and logging in and out ,but still not working.

AuntTwacky · 24/04/2022 00:56

Active is still showing old threads for me... what is the point of this update?

tomorrowalready · 24/04/2022 03:03

I have only ever looked at this site on a laptop, it must be infuriating on a smartphone screen. I was thinking I need to give up the mumsnet as it is now hurting my eyes. I actually just spent ages changing the background colours using Mozilla Firefox which looked better but disabled several functions mainly the watch list and the post function. So I am trying using Microsoft Edge which has restored the glaring white space but seems to have restored all functions and so seems to be more usable. Notifications etc don't interest me but emphasis buttons are clearer and obviously working. Also now has the edit button.

milkyaqua · 24/04/2022 03:39

Also now has the edit button.

That is just the preview button refined. There is no opportunity to actually edit once you have posted and seconds later realised you missed an obvious embarrassing typo. That is the point of an edit function.

GloriousGoosebumps · 24/04/2022 03:54

Please can you restore the ability to

  1. click on "last day" and see all the threads which have been active over the preceding 24 hours. Originally there were 3 options - last 15 minutes, last hour and last day, however you have only retained the option of last hour.

  2. the ability to go straight to a particular page by typing the desired page number into the "go to page" box. Following the redesign, you can click on a page number from 1-5 but thereafter you have to click on "next" and move page by page which is a complete waste of time when you want to go back a large number of pages.

tomorrowalready · 24/04/2022 04:17

@milkyaqua , don't know if you meant to respond to me, I've been off messing about with the colours. As I mentioned the website appears very different in Microsoft Edge to Mozilla Firefox on my laptop and so probably also on smartphones. I was surprised to be able to edit when I previewed in Edge whereas there was no post button on Firefox and no working watch function . One thing I see in writing it seems to default to American spelling, underlining colours for me. I have just rechecked the edit button after previewing and am able to add this for what it's worth. Have changed the background to blue, seems more restful.

Yes, I quoted you! It was always possible to preview and then go and change what you had typed. They have simply called that "edit" now, and it is a smoother process.

However when posters ask, as they have for many years, for an edit button, they mean the ability to correct something once it has been posted.

Most forums I use have this. Some have a very limited window of a few minutes, others longer, and this then is acknowledged by the system on the edited post and generally asks for a reason for making the edit, which is also recorded on the post. It's not like trying to build a human brain out of cardboard and batteries, it is a perfectly common function of many forums.

tomorrowalready · 24/04/2022 04:45

@milkyaqua, Oh OK, I haven't really followed the argument about the edit button, I see it could be frustrating. I am really a minimal user and cannot conceive of the annoyance of reading this on a phone. Trying to get the appearance back on Mozilla is bad enough I did compose an answer to you but on that browser all the preview, post, edit buttons have gone also cannot save my settings. It is surprisingly upsetting to feel cut off from your usual browser and be forced to use Microsoft. Anyway I need to stop messing about and go to bed so please excuse me if you do reply.

I second the comment re it not taking you to the most recent post in the watched list. It is putting me off bothering. Could we have this reinstated please?

Muppetlove · 24/04/2022 07:51

Oops, sorry about this but we seem to have lost this page.
We'll have a fish down the back of the sofa cushions. Meantime, try one of these options.

Could this message be any more twee? Thanks to Google I can find lost threads but messages like this come across like you are some cute start up organisation. Not funny or appropriate.
