Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

@JustineMumsnet I second the point made by SanFran Bear. Ironically my subscription renewed on 8th April so I almost feel I personally funded a platform that refuses to recognise my Premium subscription and is trying to charge me again to get rid of adverts.

I know you and the techs are drowning in glitches and must be feeling there is a non-stop flow of groans and complaints and I’m sorry for that.

Is there any chance of an update thread? I can’t work out - and maybe you can’t either - what has been sorted out and what are the tough nuts left to crack.

I've just seen this thread so realise it's a few days old but I have to raise again the issues around MN Premium - not even flagged on your common issues page. I know there are lots of 'features' with this service but let's face it, we sign up to not be advertised too across banners, mid thread, down the side of the page - it is excruciating!

It is disappointing that for those of us who are actually paying to use this site, there doesn't appear to be any movement or update on the issue. I'm still drowning in ads which is the reason I signed up (in the first week or release, I might add) and yes, the other glitches are there too but for some Premium users to be fine and yet many others to not, surely this is something that should be straight forward enough to resolve... its not everyone so please explain how so many of us have just been dumped from this service?

I can't see anything different to the old version except for millions of missing features, no bookmarks, threads gone and only half the boards...

Hi @NCTDN - we are reading every post on all of these threads. All of the issues you've mentioned we're working on and hoping will be sorted this week. Really sorry for the frustration.

@SueMumsnet I still haven't got my Watched threads back. If I actually track down some of the ones I know I had watched (difficult/impossible in some cases without Advanced Search) They are still marked as Watched but are not showing up in my list. I can't rewatch them either. I have examples, if that helps?

Hi all,
Here's an update on the things we've released today:

  • Fixed deleted threads showing in Active
  • Fixed an issue with clicking to bookmark when logged out not taking you back to the correct place after registration
  • Fixed an issue where local would display an error if you changed the radius
  • Allowed threads and replies to be submitted with Ctrl+Enter
  • Fixed an issue where hidden topics weren't displaying properly in settings
  • Fixed an issue where watched threads on the app were different than the site
  • Fixed Android app times being an hour out
  • Made all timezones reflect the user's selected timezone in the apps
  • Made pagination arrows bigger for accessibility
  • Made back button work on PMs
  • Reordered Mumsnet Emojis
  • Fixed being able to change username in the app
  • Fixed an issue with not being able to click through the page numbers

We'll continue to work through the remaining bugs/issues/enhancements. In the meantime thanks for your patience and do please highlight any further problems.

Hi @NCTDN - we're really really struggling to track this issue down. We've spent hours and hours trying to recreate the problem and bookmarks are working fine for us.

So can I ask - would anyone who's having this problem regularly be willing to jump on a v quick video call with us so we can watch the problem in action and try and work out what's going on? Would take no more than 5 mins and would be hugely appreciated. If you're willing - please post here and then I'll PM you to set up. Thanks so much for any help!

The list on 'watching' Keeps resetting.

I'll go down the list of threads I'm watching and will I watch them all. As soon as I refresh or log back into the app they're all back there and highlighted as having new posts but none of them do.

Ok thanks @Buffyismyaltaego - will get this looked into asap

Notifications now appear, after weeks of error message. But they still don't work! They link to the first page/first post of each thread, instead of directing to the first unread post. Why oh why? Endless paging through and scrolling to find where I last read to. Is this intended behaviour - insert colourful expression of choice - or will it be fixed?

(Viewing on Safari, iPad mini, latest iOS.)

Hi all - really sorry about the remaining issues - a quick update


  • the formatting issues in the app (paragraph issues, posts being cut off) should now be fixed - you need to update the app to the latest version

  • bookmarks and refresh - this is a tricky one but we're looking at it and hope to come up with a solution

  • Pressing back not taking you back to Active - this is now fixed

  • Advanced Search and general Search issues - we're working on these - hopefully we should have something in next week or so

  • We seem to have an issue with Androids automatically logging people out - again we're looking at this issue

  • Pressing back on Trending taking you back to Active - again we're looking at this

  • PMs seem to not be working with Firefox - we're looking into this


Sorry for the frustration and thanks for reporting - we're working through as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for patience.

hi @SirChenjins this is actually a surprisingly tricky one - annoyingly, the text editor we’re using doesn’t allow it. We may be able to put in place a fix to make it happen, we’re looking at it at the moment - will let you know.

Any update on the ability to show all posts in a thread via the dropdown menu without having to make it your default? It was really handy for searching for a keyword with the browser in a long thread. But I don't want my default to be show all posts.

Hi @EspeciallyDistracted This isn’t something we can do at the moment - it’s pretty hard going on the servers - but there may be a way we can bring it back in the future. Sorry that’s not a more helpful answer.

Have not read this thread - but I just want to tell MN HQ that the new Talk site is absolutely dreadful. Why did you trade in a lovely working site, for one that is ugly, huge, too spaced out and most importantly, doesn't even work?! ARGH. How do I view a full thread now? ARGHHHH.

Hi - the layout isn't that different from previously - only real differences are that the column doesn't stretch across the page as you scroll which was a change made largely for accessibility reasons (narrower columns of text are meant to be easier to read) and there's slightly more padding between posts. There are no more ads on the pages than there used to be. The grey box is to accommodate ads which are different shapes - not sure there's much to be done about that but I'll certainly check.

@JustineMumsnet , @SueMumsnet , @KimMumsnet - what about the issues of the random listing of Last Hour threads, and the list updating every time we click back from a thread?

It used to be that the threads in Last Hour would be sorted according to topics, so it was easy to find the topics I wanted to see, and if I clicked onto a thread and read it, then clicked the back button to go back to the Last Hour threads list, I went back to the list, and it hadn’t updated in the few seconds I was away from it - now it updates in nano seconds, so if there are two threads I want to read, the second one disappears down the list whilst I’m looking at the first.

It makes the site very frustrating to use.

We think should be able to do something about the grey box so it's the same colour as the background colour (ie doesn't appear as a box). We'll get on this - thanks for the feedback.

Looks like the Pinned threads at the top of Active aren't showing for you - they are showing for us so I'm thinking it might be your particular set up - are you able to share the browser and device you're using?

Hi all,

Thanks for your patience on all this, here's the latest update on the issues we're looking into with some idea of timings for fixes - although obviously they're not set in stone it's hard to give exact timings for tech fixes because when you get into a bug/issue it's often the case that it's more complicated than you first thought - but with that caveat in mind:

  • Dates to be displayed as yesterday/today - we're hoping to release this either today or Monday
  • Images - we're on these at the moment - we know about images posting sideways and the size of issues - we're working on fixes for both of these at the moment and they will hopefully be sorted early next week. There seems to be an issue for some with images causing the page to refresh, we could do with seeing this in action - if it's happening to you it would be great if you could get in touch to show us?
  • Search - we've made some improvements to the current Search function (better date filter, getting it to remember your filters etc) that will be released today. Advanced Search is being worked on but will be a couple of weeks before it's ready as it's pretty complex.
  • Outstanding bookmarks issue - we think we have a solution to this and this will be released either later today or Monday depending on how quickly we can sort it
  • Ghost PM notifications - we've identified the issue here and have a fix so that it shouldn't happen going forward - if you are currently having this problem, however, please get in touch as we need to know your username to solve the problem for you.
  • Notifications not taking you to the right place on thread - we need to do quite a bit of work on the notifications backend to get this sorted which is a pretty big job - so that will be a couple of weeks before it's sorted
  • Auto-capitalisation - am afraid there's bad news on this one - the text editor we're using does not allow this to happen - we've raised it with the provider but it's open-source software and it doesn't look like they're minded to fix it - so we're stuck without this for now although we'll keep looking for solutions - sorry not better news on that one
  • Accessibility - we have made a lot of changes based on feedback about what we needed to improve - including keyboard shortcuts and making small arrows and pagination bigger and bolder. We're looking into a Dark Mode. Any further input on how we can further improve Accessibility further would be much appreciated

That's where we're up to, as I said in my OP, Mumsnet is a huge legacy platform with multiple versions, edge cases and variations built up over the years so I'm not surprised there have been quite a few bugs/issues/oversights we needed to solve post launch of the new version (it wasn't for want of testing with users which we did for months). I am confident we'll get there though - we are working really hard to get though the list. Meantime thanks for your forbearance and I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.

We did multiple rounds of beta testing with hundreds of users - which raised lots of things which we adjusted prior to launch. Sadly it's nye on impossible to catch every single scenario in testing because we have millions of users with 100s of different browser and device combinations. This was a rebuild of an entire platform with many, many different features and variations built up over 20 years. Ideally we'd have no issues for anyone of course but in the scheme of it it's not surprising there are some. But we will sort them.
