Mumsnet Beta site - can you spare a few mins to have a look around?

JustineMumsnet · 04/02/2022 17:29

As trailed last May, we’ve been working on a new version of the Mumsnet Platform for a while now and we’re aiming to release it in a few weeks' time. We’ve been testing the site with Mumsnetters since July last year and we’ve been incorporating their feedback along the way. Now we're ready for the next stage of testing and we’d love as many of you as possible to have a play with it and tell us what you think/ uncover any glitches or concerns.

Our main objective in re-platforming is to move onto a new code base that will allow us to develop and improve features much faster. We have kept the functionality largely unchanged for now, aside from small improvements to the user experience and to a few features that don't function at all well at the moment. So, for example, there is a new version of Search. We've also been working on improving Private Messages although they’re not included in the Beta site just yet but should be released next week - we'll post here when they are.

If you’d like to help us test the new platform:

  • When you access the beta website you’ll be asked for a passcode, please enter 246810

You can log in with your existing Mumsnet username and password.

For this test - we’ve taken a snapshot of the live site as it was at the end of 31 January - so any new posts, or changes you’ve made since then, won’t be reflected on the Beta site.

Whilst navigating around the Beta site, if you notice any usability issues or bugs, please report them via the “feedback” tab you’ll see on each page (see screenshot above). Any time you can spare to have a play (be it minutes or hours) will be hugely useful and much appreciated.

A few final things to note

1 - For now we're just focusing on the web version of the site, so if you only use the app, then we don't need you to participate just yet - we'll be looking at that in due course.

2 - If you’re a Premium member, this won’t be reflected on the Beta site just yet.

3 - If you’ve registered on Mumsnet with a social account, you may need to reset your password to login

Big thanks!

I like the look of it but there's topics from 2018 on the front page.

I went to AIBU and there was one about black people, I clicked it and was going to reply but noticed it's from ages ago.

There's no new post I could see that bumped it back up, so maybe a glitch in the system?

MaryAndHerNet · 04/02/2022 18:15

Here you go look.
The one with 600 some odd replies.

GrannytoaUnicorn · 04/02/2022 18:27

It doesn't look any different to me. Slightly different font?!

I joined the Beta trial a few weeks ago and didn't see any difference so I just went back to the app.

Newchallenge · 04/02/2022 18:28

I had a look. On my phone screen I could only see the top line of the first post, without scrolling - there was so much advertising gubbins taking up space.
The most obvious changes were to font and background.I don't mind that but not sure it is necessary.

Lougle · 04/02/2022 18:29

I'm on a laptop, but there's no 'feedback' button on any page that I can see.

First bit of feedback is that only some threads have a 'see next/see all' button for the OP's threads.

The font is too small for my iPhone SE screen.

I prefer to see more posts than space taken up with white space/ bookmark.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 04/02/2022 18:34

Done the survey but there is no question about the see next/see all so just popping this here.

There is no see next option on the opening post.

Pressing see next causes the page to reload then scroll to the next post every time rather than a straight step to the next we have at the moment.

Other than that I like it - aside from the usual "it looks a bit different" adjustment!

Hello!

Feedback form is here: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CDW3SZM

Thanks!

LilyMumsnet · 04/02/2022 18:44

Hi both

We had to remove those images because of the details contained in them but thanks for flagging, we're debugging as we speak!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/02/2022 18:50

Further observations:

-Site seems very, very slow
-Threads I'm on seems to be missing most recent threads I have posted on
-Drop down menu looks very unfinished
-Threads are not appearing most recent first which is a bit of an issue

  • What are "Expert posts" and how are they defined?
  • No view all OPs posts
  • Ad placeholders everywhere (am premium)
  • Threads look clean, I like the font and spacing tweets
  • Love love love that report and quote have been moved so that I won't keep reporting when I mean to quote

Pixiedown123 · 04/02/2022 19:26

The feedback link on your screenshot doesn't show for me (android chrome). The next/all links are missing on post one, and a mess on some other posts in this thread beta.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4420303-How-am-I-going-to-fix-this-DIL-issue?reply=113106720

ClariceQuiff · 04/02/2022 19:33

Wouldn't work at all on older version of Safari Sad

Rummikub · 04/02/2022 19:41

Oh no! I have an iPad iOS 6 that I still use as my Mumsnet device

MaizeAmaze · 04/02/2022 19:46

On the survey, when it asks have I ever posted/started a thread etc, is it talking about MN in general, or on the beta system?

PunsDontKillPeople · 04/02/2022 19:50

It won't let me log in with my existing details - just says "email address already taken" Confused

moneyfornothingandthekids · 04/02/2022 19:55

Looking on my phone. Have to say not great experience. Ads everywhere very very enjoying. And text much bigger so you see less and scroll more wjth annoying ads.

MaizeAmaze · 04/02/2022 19:56

Feedback:
Feels slow
Big adverts, I'm guessing from the space
Feels clean, but not making use of the edges of the screen - wide margins
Search doesnt seem to work -tried copying and pasting a username in, and results dont seem to reflect what I searched
Cant "see next" or "see all" from the OP.
My colour coding gas gone. Will I be able to highlight OP and my posts with some playing?

toppkatz · 04/02/2022 19:57

It's seized up on me, I had the little blue wheel of doom, and now it says Oops - page not found.

Desktop/Chrome

By the way, it is all rather long and thin and doesn't really look right on a laptop with a screen in landscape.

Lougle · 04/02/2022 20:02

It defaults to register new user - did you definitely click to switch to login?
Akire · 04/02/2022 20:07

Have to say don’t like new fonts like shouting in your face! Plus headings have changed I have larger text on phone so can’t see full headings. What jumps
Up loudest is names of users when 99% of time you are not going recognise them
Or really need know who’s posting the lighter font worked perfectly fine for this.

I've given up on the feedback form. I used to do software testing and I'd get paid for each issue I submitted. There's no way I'm going to do a site run through free of charge. Sorry. You should be recruiting proper testers to do the sort of thing you're asking people to do here.

grapewine · 04/02/2022 20:18

Agree with this.
