here
I've a couple of comments about it - especially the bf section (surprise, surprise!).
And the weaning section.

Hi all, We're interested to hear what you don't like about this particular campaign - sorry it's late I know and many of you will be long gone but have only just got in so hopefully you'll pick up on this tomorrow. Is it because of the actual text of the ad or because of the way it's been presented to you, or a bit of both? Sorry if it appears an obtuse question but we don't like to offend so we'd be grateful if you'd expand a bit on exactly what it is that you object to and we promise to give it some thought/get back to you. Thanks.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:22
Yes that's true VVVQ but a lot of our ads/ online chats don't go along with that philosophy - why is this one so offensive?
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:24
Why belittling? And please do highlight anything that's factually incorrect - we'll make sure Avent see it and change the copy immediately.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:27
Do you think it diminishes Tiktok/Hm's advice because it's there or because it's on Talk? (by the way if it's the latter I do kinda see what you mean - it maybe that we shouldn't Talk shouldn't be used for this kind of stuff?)
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:30
Well actually I don't know if that's true Aitch - I exclusively breastfed 4 kids but used a lot of Avent products along the way - but that's by the by I guess - what's more important is that if it feels that way to folks then it's clearly counter-productive.
VVQ lots of ads are thinly veiled as advice imo.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:31
Cash.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:38
Tinker, I do see your point - but it's an uncensored public forum and the beauty is, you can say what you like - if we were sitting here editing posts then I could see your beef but the very fact that you can say all this - in fact (within reason) whatever you like about this campaign in some ways makes it less misleading than a banner campaign. Having said that, as said already I think we probably shouldn't let Talk be used in this way as a rule pretty much because I do sympathise with the "it just doesn't feel right argument". So there we are - we have probably just hit upon a new guideline for MN advertising...
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:40
VVVQ - MN get's the cash which pays the guys at MNHQ's wages - without it we don't get paid... there's not a lot of difference tbh.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 00:45
Yes we are going to continue with this because we have entered into some sort of contract I imagine - unless the advertiser wishes to pull it that is, which they might I guess because clearly it's not going down well - we'll ask them. Have just checked - it's scheduled to run until the end of the year I'm afraid.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 01:04
Well we have a ban on formula milk advertising for the reason that it's misleading - ie the government bans formula milk ads and so they came up with follow on milk - but we don't have a ban on Avent, and tbh I don't see why we should. There's nothing intrinsically wrong as we see it with a) bottles or b) breast pumps or c) sterilisers.
I guess some people think there's something dodgy about Avent giving breastfeeding advice because they make bottles - but many breastfeeders use Avent expressing machines, bottles and sterilisers (I know I did) so I'm not sure that holds. In fact, and I don't know, but I suspect that's why Avent wanted to do this - to show that they are as much about breastfeeding as bottlefeeding (but that's by the by).
Some folk are saying that they don't want any expert advice on MN, but we have had plenty of experts on that have been popular/useful - Tanya Byron for example.
Having said all that I do see your point about the use of the talk boards for thinly-veiled advertorials, and I promise we'll have a think about it and maybe look at changing our guidelines on ads in view of your objections.
Thanks for your input!
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 01:19
If only we had a business plan .
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 01:26
She shouldn't be billed as that Aitch - that is definitely bolleaux - we'll change that.
Incidentally, do you think we could get by on Dragons' Den if we said we had a lot of funny women and a bat?
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 01:27
Just checked - she's not billed as MN's wellbeing advisor is she - just Avent's?
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 01:40
Yes well I agree it's all bit cheesy but I do think it's pretty clear it's advertising and not a MN expert - the page is headed Phillips Avent promotion and the ad in the newsletter is boxed out of the editorial and Titled phillips avent. Still as said we take your point in general about the mixing of ads and content - and we promise to give it some thought and to generally pull our socks up.
Sweet dreams all.
JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 15:42
As promised last night we've been in touch with Philips Avent today and they naturally don?t wish to offend anyone. So we have agreed that we will pull the thread from Talk which asks members to post questions for Vicki Scott. Philips AVENT are keen to point out that Vicki has been working with mums and babies for nearly 20 years in her capacity as a qualified midwife, nursery and maternity nurse and so they are confident that Vicki is adequately qualified to provide the advice that she gives.
Anyone who wants Vicki's advice will be able to send their question from her promotion page in a little bit.
Essentially, as I said last night, we do sympathise with the generally-expressed view that mixing up Talk and advertorial in this way is not a very good idea. Apologies - we won't be doing it again.

I know Carrie passed on that query yesterday Can'tsleep - so I'm sure she'll be back with an answer before too long.
