Mumsnet closing a thread

I’ve been here for many years. About 14 all in and today, for the first time, I’ve seen that mumsnet HQ closed a thread because it was a few months old.

Why would this be? There must be hundreds of zombie threads running. I’ve been on many and read many but I’ve never seen any closed so why this particular thread. Confused.

Hello. More often than not we're happy to either let a thread run its course or - if we do have concerns - delete it entirely. Less often, we'll close a thread: it's not a new thing but it's not something we tend to do that often.

Sometimes a zombie thread might attract an unfathomable amount of spam posts. We might close it to stop it being spammed.

Now and then, if it's a topic that polarises opinion, we might close a thread overnight and then open it again when we can better help keep it on track - now and then we find that's better than losing the thread entirely.

Another reason we might close a thread is where we can see it's descending but earlier on it contained lots of really thoughtful, helpful comments that we'd rather not have to zap. We don't do this that often but if we can save a thread this way we will consider it.

Hope that makes sense and if there any threads in particular that have you scratching your heads then drop us a line at contactus@ and we'll take a look for you.
