To think it’s odd there is no fat /body acceptance section

It seems to be a popular new topic . More people aren’t excepting diet culture and are looking to be more body positive. Why isn’t there one on mums net ?

2020iscancelled How would you envisage that philosophy translating to a MN topic?

excusethepun · 18/02/2021 20:43

@Sunnydays999 why do overweight people need their own section to discuss things? You'll open a can of worms with this.

You don't see a section for underweight people so what makes it different for you?

PurpleDaisies · 18/02/2021 20:44

@2020iscancelled

Body acceptance can apply to healthy and fit women who have problem areas that they’ve spent their lives battling against.

A slim size 8 woman who won’t wear shorts because of her cellulite.

A slim woman with large, out of proportion boobs who spent her life raging against them because they make her feel ugly.

A woman who had acne as a teenager and now has skin covered in scars and pot marks.

All examples of people who might wish to begin the journey to “accept” themselves as they which have fuck all to do with weight / fat / obesity.

The body positivity movement is mainly about weight though. There’s a nice bbc bite size article here...

Surely if people truly loved their body then they'd be more inclined to treat it better?

I find it hard to believe a person who says they love their large body whilst simultaneously putting it at serious risk.

Body positivity can be a good thing but it can also be very dangerous. Everyone be allowed to feel comfortable and confident, but promoting obesity is extremely foolish.

Sunnydays999 · 18/02/2021 20:46

2020 I agree . I find it strange how people are so against feeling happy and positive about yourself . Even if someone is bigger body acceptance won’t stop them living a healthy life. Most people don’t diet because others batter them down . My view of my body is fairly neutral I see it as a vehicle to get me through life . I don’t become devastated and hate my body if I put weight on . When I’m ready I up the exercise or think about if I’m eating because I’m upset .

@excusethepun I didn’t say anything about weight. I said I was anti diet culture . The fact you say it will open a can of worms makes me think it’s emotive , and maybe be should be spoken about . It’s discussed on most other social platforms . I thought it was strange I hadn’t seen it on here

CaptSkippy · 18/02/2021 20:52

I don't need a separate section perse, but I can understand others might want it.
Just want to say that I am fat and I am done appologizing for it or always prefacing it with a disclaimer: "I am not promoting it or anything."
I am who I am and those who find it repulsive can direct their gaze elsewhere.

kowari · 18/02/2021 20:53

@excusethepun

There's a difference between being body positive and promoting obesity.

There isn't a separate section for fat people just like there isn't for skinny people.

Exactly!

But does it need a whole topic - could you not start a thread?

Whyistheteacold · 18/02/2021 20:56
@HappyasLaura I think there are lots of people who are happy with their bodies despite having a higher bmi
I'm confused, what would you actually discuss? Threads about how happy you are to be large? Soon people will be asking for boards for people with blue eyes Hmm

excusethepun · 18/02/2021 20:57

@Sunnydays999 your title specifies it’s odd not to have a separate section for fat acceptance. People would be up in arms about an anorexia acceptance section.

I don’t think it’s right to have a topic for it.

MajesticWhine · 18/02/2021 21:09

I have not seen many threads on this topic which suggests there may not be a need for an entire section. Why not start a thread in style and beauty?

Sunnydays999 · 18/02/2021 21:10

There are sections for every diet type going . I just wondered why there wasn’t one for body acceptance, especially with it being such a big topic on social media .

OP posts:
Sunnydays999 · 18/02/2021 21:13

@MajesticWhine good idea Smile
Maybe there isn’t a call for it on here . I think it’s much younger people that tend to be interested in it .My sister had mentioned it and I hadn’t really heard of it , quite a lot of following on Instagram and podcasts .

There just aren't many questions around body posivity OP. It's a pretty well known concept now across all ages. Unless you were thinking that people would post pictures of themselves to receive compliments?

Sunnydays999 · 19/02/2021 10:02

No , I just wouldn’t think there where that many questions you could ask about dieting but there seems to be loads

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/02/2021 10:07

There is actually trillion valid questions to ask about weightloss. Especially since you can make yourself ill if you go to some extreme.

Can you define 'bigger' in this context?

A bit overweight?
Very overweight?
Obese?
Morbidly obese?

'Bigger' means different things to different people and it's often used to politely describe the above. Often you'll find it can and does stop them living a healthy life. If not now, then eventually.

LApprentiSorcier · 19/02/2021 12:15

This is a very important point. From my own experience, being slightly or moderately overweight (say, BMI 26 - 28) doesn't noticeably affect my wellbeing, but once I tip into the obese category (30 +) there is a clear impact on my general health - aches and pains, feeling too hot, getting out of breath easily, sweating and rashes ('chub rub') feeling generally uncomfortable.

And a key point for me is that it worsens with age. So you probably have an obese influencer in their 20s who feels fit and healthy - will they still feel like that in their 30s, 40s, 50s?

So while I don't think it should matter from an aesthetic point of view what your weight is - as long as you are happy with how you look - I wouldn't encourage anyone to stay in the obese bracket if they can avoid it, simply because I know from experience it's not a good place to be.

Bluesername · 19/02/2021 15:50

Self acceptance and better self esteem is more likely to lead to a healthy lifestyle than beating oneself up about one's size.

I bet many of the weight puritans wouldn't say no to a gin section on here.

Why not. There is a food section🤷🏻
I would probs not welcome arld acceptence and "be happy with your arld" section though...

LApprentiSorcier · 19/02/2021 18:45

A beer and wine section would be fine with me Grin.
