MNHQ, please can you go back to moving COVID-related threads into the COVID topic?

Obviously there are some run of the mill threads which are understandably in certain topics, but the hysterical and frankly in some cases offensive threads have started to re-appear at an alarming rate.

Could you not move those to the COVID topic where the hysteria mongers gather, that way those of us who have that topic hidden aren’t bombarded by so many of these threads.

Perhaps if all COVID related posts in AIBU could be moved it would be easy to keep track of which ones to move, and would encourage people with genuine COVID queries to post in the correct topic if they don’t want their thread hidden from a huge Chunk of MN.

Oh yes please

AlternativePerspective · 19/07/2020 19:52

I hid the topic early on as did many others IIRC.

I’m currently on a thread where it’s being suggested that anyone with a cough should stay home. Never mind the fact that some people have a cough for other reasons e.g. side effects of drugs/hay fever etc...

Oh, and having a test is unreliable so this shouldn’t be taken as proof that someone doesn’t have COVID. No-one has yet answered my question as to why we are even bothering to test then if this is the case....

Thanks OP, this is an interesting question.

We don't tend to move threads automatically, but can do so on occasion when they are reported to us. What are others' thoughts on this at the moment?

Don't hesitate to report threads, in any case, as we'll always take a look.

AlternativePerspective · 19/07/2020 22:18

Thank you for replying.

Bumping the thread for more responses hopefully.

Automatically moving sound awesome to me.

Staplemaple · 19/07/2020 22:34

Yes please move them.

BitOfFun · 19/07/2020 22:40

The threads were being removed to the correct topic when this all started- it's just that they've begun to creep back into AIBU and Chat.

user14234675325678 · 19/07/2020 22:41

Hmm... I think I've stopped noticing...

There was a point in the early days where covid threads were all being moved automatically though, wasn't there? Or I thought that was happening.

I think it's harder now to draw the line because it has affected pretty much everything. Would you want them moved if covid related stuff was one element or only where it's the primary factor?

Lsquiggles · 19/07/2020 22:44

I agree. If I wanted to read about covid i wouldn't have hidden the topic

PenelopePitstop49 · 19/07/2020 22:46

I actually left MN for several months because every other thread was full of Covid hysteria. There are a lot of MN users with health anxiety and it saddens me to see them winding themselves up into frenzies.

I personally think there needs to be a strong ring fence around the topic for that reason alone. Keep the rest of the boards clear so that people aren't constantly being bombarded with frankly some very inaccurate information.

KoalasandRabbit · 19/07/2020 22:55

It would be good if you could move all the covid and anti-covid threads out of the main section so can have a covid free zone.

Ibake · 19/07/2020 23:00

Absolutely. If it's about coronavirus then coronavirus is it's home. Then maybe the rest of the site can get back to normal because the vibe of the whole place is just off at the moment.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 20/07/2020 09:24

But practically everything at the moment is Covid related. It isn't like the royal family who are only on the news occasionally so therefore it makes sense to move RF threads to another board. It is still obviously a massive ongoing problem causing issues in most aspects of life. Everything from jobs to family relationships may be struggling due to Covid.

Just hide anything with a clue in the title?

KoalasandRabbit · 20/07/2020 14:46

The people needing advice on holidays / employment is fine - quite happy for that to stay, its the abuse that gets annoying and its on both sides and all over the site with lots of use of insults based on mental illness and autism which are just left to stand all over the place. I've reported some of the attacks on autistic people and they do get removed but the attacks on mental illness (mad, demented etc) they are everywhere and just left to stand and its like a group of playground bullies. Not always clear from title. It used to be your could just avoid AIBU but now there's lots of threads in chat as well from the anti-covid brigade.

HebeMumsnet · 22/07/2020 10:21

Thanks for the thoughts. We're still reading and passing them on.

In general, if Covid threads are reported to us we're still moving them but we have to say we aren't getting quite so many reported currently and perhaps that's connected to what a PP said here - it's all becoming a bit more part of our daily lives now and a bit more normalised, so it's harder to differntiate a Covid thread from a thread about visiting a supermarket or going on holiday. Anyway, those factors might explain why you're seeing more of them.

We're interested to hear people's thoughts though and do always report threads if you think they should be moved. We're always happy to have a look.
