TRAVEL CALENDAR - WHEN AND WHERE TO GO - MNHQ WANTS YOUR HELP

AbbyMumsnet · 12/09/2007 15:13

We want to put together a family travel calendar and would appreciate your help! We're looking to include the following:

* When is the best time to go to a particular region/country - and why? We'd like to cover both weather and special events - for example, the Scilly Isles are gorgeous in early spring because the temperate climate means all the flowers are out/Crete's great at the end of October as weather still pretty good and there's an island-wide festival etc etc

* Your favourite locations/resorts/hotels etc - and what age they're best for.

But feel free to include suggestons/info' on anything else you'd find useful on this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance - MNHQ

Well, Corsica's maquis is in bloom in May, and still fragrant and green in June.
In fact Corsica in June is just lovely although the Med is not too warm

Also agree Egypt in October is lovely along the red sea. Have tried Hyatt Regency in Sharm and Oberoi in Hurghada, both fab. Hyatt probably better with children though. Weather is always dry, and guaranteed hot.

Also just been to Sheraton Pine Cliffs Resort in Algarve, Portugal at beginning of October. Had DS who was 19 months with us. It was fabulous. Weather was iffy at first but lovely for majority of two weeks and lovely and warm without being too hot for little ones (or pregnant ladies).

Great kids club that DS wanted to go to even on days he wasn't booked in to go, and lots for him to do. They do babysitting (using hotel staff) and I think there are nine restaurants and five pools (two kiddies ones).

Are already considering going back next year when we will have DTs as well as DS.

Florence the second week in November - there's some sort of festival at the beginning and then suddenly it's empty - we found this out by accident on our honeymoon. (Obviously, a non-accompanied-by-school-age children suggestion.)

With school-age children, Paris for the October half-term. Not too hot to walk everywhere, as you should; not too cold to take boat trips. Altogether GREAT.

Have heard that Venice for February half-term is equally good ("before the canals start to pong").

Someone mentioned the highlands of Scotland. We had somne fabulous family holidays camping there with ds and dd. Our most favourite place was the Applecross Peninsula
