Can I ‘unbookmark’?

Itschristmasimallowedwine · 15/12/2019 19:21

When I’m on a thread and close the adverts, I, 9 times out of 10, accidentally press the bookmark button.

I don’t like to bookmark but I can’t unbookmark. Is there anyway to do this?

OP posts:

I just accidentally bookmarked a post on a thread I don't even care about and can't see how to unbookmark it. I'm using Chrome on a mobile device.

Now I'm looking into it, I also can't work out how to locate my bookmarks, so if I ever wanted to do it deliberately how would I find them? The thread/post hasn't appeared in the I'm Watching section or anywhere else that I can see. It must be somewhere though, and I like things to be tidy so not being able to unbookmark it is really bothering me! Does anyone know how to sort it out?

Chemenger · 02/05/2020 11:58

The bookmark only works when you are on a thread so if you never go back to that thread the bookmark won’t bother you. If you want something to appear in your watch list you have to watch it. If you bookmark in the wrong place just go back to the OP (or wherever you want to be) and bookmark that, then the thread will always start there. Bookmarking is probably the thing I find most useful on MN, please don’t mess with it too much.

Oh, so it's not like on Instagram where the little bookmark symbol saves the post for you in a separate section? That's not so bad then.

Still quite annoying that it's so easy to do accidentally and can't be undone, though. Making it so that people could touch the symbol again to undo the action wouldn't stop people who like the feature from using it.

This. So much this!

Indeed. So simple - and so obvious.

Still no update? I’m on my iPhone and keep bookmarking accidentally while scrolling. Don’t understand why you can’t just click again to remove the bookmark

DappledThings · 14/05/2020 08:39

Don’t understand why you can’t just click again to remove the bookmark

Seconded. It seems really obvious just to make the bookmark button an on/off toggle

JoMumsnet · 14/05/2020 10:32

Huge apologies for the delay in responding here.

For now, the bookmark function on the mobile site doesn't toggle on and off - though we've taken all of your feedback on board and are looking into this for the future.

As Chemenger has said, if you accidentally bookmark a post within a thread, that bookmark will be removed if you subsequently bookmark any other post, including the Opening Post.

Just for the record, threads on which you've bookmarked a post aren't automatically saved in your Watch list. To Watch a thread, click on the blue circle with the white arrow at the top of a thread and then click on 'Watch this thread'. So if you've accidentally bookmarked a post and do want to return to the thread, you'd have to scroll up to the top in order to Watch the thread, so at that stage you could also re-bookmark the opening post.

Sorry again if this isn't the answer you were hoping for.

If anyone's not yet tried the app, please give it a go - the app does allow you to toggle on and off a bookmarked post.

@JoMumsnet I’ve tried what you suggested and it didn’t work. How can I remove it from “I’m on”?

Hello, do you want to hide the thread?

peachypetite · 17/05/2020 11:11

Yes how can I get threads off “I’m on”?

LetTheBirdsSing · 08/10/2020 14:41

Hi @JoMumsnet is there any update on plans to add a button to remove bookmarks on the mobile site? It’s really frustrating to not be able to get rid of accidentally clicked on bookmarks

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 08/10/2020 14:45

Having never accidentally bookmarked a post before I've done it about 10 times this week. Is there still no way to get rid of the bookmark?

soniamumsnet · 08/10/2020 14:46

Hi @LetTheBirdsSing just to let you know that there aren't any plans to change this at the moment, but we're certainly keen to hear your comments for any future changes.

All feedback is really appreciated, and will be taken on board. Flowers

LittleMissLockdown · 08/10/2020 14:54

It's disheartening to hear that you don't plan on making it an on/off feature. It would take hardly any effort at all to code it so it could be turned on and off. It's obvious it frustrates many of your users who access the site via mobile.

soniamumsnet · 08/10/2020 15:03

Hi @LittleMissLockdown thanks for your suggestion. We'll pass on that feedback. Flowers

LetTheBirdsSing · 08/10/2020 15:05

Thanks for the quick reply @soniamumsnet! Can I ask why it won’t be changed? Is it a very time consuming, and therefore expensive, fix to make to the site?

Babdoc · 08/10/2020 15:14

Gosh, I thought it was just me with clumsy fingers! There are loads of us accumulating unwanted bookmarks by the sound of it.
MN, would it really be so difficult to make it reversible, as so many of us would like?
The site is difficult enough to use, with no edit facility for our own posts, or button to press to “like” other people’s posts.I often want to show approval or support to a PP’s point of view, without wishing to clog up a thread with posts of “hear hear” or whatever.
