Auto-filling usernames doesn't always work

Any reason why this would be?

I think it's a great new addition to the site and makes it much easier to tag/reply to people. But there seems to be no rhyme nor reason why sometimes it works and others it doesn't.

(FYI I'm on a Mac, using Safari)
