What boards are disappearing or merging?

champagnebrain · 15/05/2019 20:58

Is there a list of potential culls?

OP posts:
53rdWay · 18/05/2019 12:54

Maybe you could have two Active pages - one showing AIBU/Chat only and one showing all the other boards?

SoupDragon · 18/05/2019 13:20

Or just one showing all of them so that they are all in one place.

The only way that would work for "everyone" is to have one that shows all and one that excludes aibu/Chat.

AuntieStella · 23/05/2019 07:23

Still think it's a shame it's being done thus way round, rather than consulting uses on what couid go.

I saw some spam in 'Toys reunited' and that's one that really needs to go.

Ditto boards which never took off, like The Plughole, Is This Nice? Burth Announcents, possibly all of Bloggers Talk, Books Classified, Wine, probably end House Swaps (doubt MN is a good platform to share personal info), Podcasts (merge with radio) and Streamed TV (merge with Telly Addicts), Arts and Crafts Oictures, Have You Seen This? Facebook, EBay, Crime, Human Rights and Politics (merge into 'In The News') Newbies Corner, Refugee Crisus (again merge to 'In The News'), Products, and the entire For sale/Wanted section

Also merge Cakes and Bakes with Baking

SoupDragon · 23/05/2019 07:26

If they asked users what could go they would get a miriad of different answers and be no further forward.

AuntieStella · 23/05/2019 07:44

Yes, someone wouid need to go through all the replies, and see whether there was any points of commonality and that would then be the firstncull. It really wouldn't take long to do, it's a very straightforward thing.

If there are really no points of commonality (for example, do you really want to keep all those I said I'd be happy to see the back of?) then all that has been lost is a couple of weeks. For a non-urgent task, that's nothing.

SoupDragon · 23/05/2019 07:48

The only topic I check specifically is Arts and Crafts so I have no idea what topics could go.

I actually think posting on the topics concerned is a far better way of doing it - it was quite clear that Teenagers should stay for example.

IrenetheQuaint · 25/05/2019 09:13

It is odd that, after many years of letting disused topics fester pointlessly in corners despite regular pleas from MNers to sort them out, MN are now suddenly planning a massive cull including many popular and useful topics. Why not start by culling the genuinely unnecessary and forgotten topics as outlined by AuntieStella?

This. Also have to wonder who Mumsnet are enjoying if they think babies and teenagers are similar enough to be in the same topic, though I know that's been reversed now.

Frittata · 28/05/2019 05:35

*employing, not enjoying Blush

mathanxiety · 28/05/2019 05:55

Put 'Teenagers' down in the section at the bottom (PC) where Parenting shortcuts are. At present it's just Babies, Children and Education there.

mathanxiety · 28/05/2019 06:07

You could also make it a lot easier to find topics on the mobile app. A full topics list would be nice.

mathanxiety · 28/05/2019 06:08

And here's a controversial one that shouldn't be controversial - put Brexit in 'In The News'.

Because it's in the news after all.

imip · 28/05/2019 06:16

FGS, please leave larger families as it is! Combining it with parenting will leave people too afraid to post - and mumsnet is supposed to be a website for parents - even ones with more than 2 kids who feel they will be attacked when asking for advice!

TheRedBarrows · 28/05/2019 06:36

Camping was targeted.
Which is not going down well on the Camping board.

Surely a site that regularly invites senior politicians and is referenced by politicians can be serious enough to support a Politics discussion? Sometimes the politics not yet In The News is the most important.

SoupDragon · 28/05/2019 08:29

And here's a controversial one that shouldn't be controversial - put Brexit in 'In The News'.

Well, no, because it was specifically set up so that people could hide all the Brexit crap without hiding the rest of the news. It is also time limited by its nature and will die when this shambles is over.

FleetwoodStorms · 28/05/2019 19:20

Perhaps some of the teenage- related threads in other places should be moved into teenagers

When they were thinking about merging the Teenage board, I reported a couple of AIBU threads and suggested they be moved to Teens. MNHQ said they don't usually move threads unless the OP requests it. They should change their policy and get shifting "for traffic" posts promptly to the right board.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 28/05/2019 20:34

They don't always consult the opening poster, and I do think a bit of moving of threads is a good thing.

It makes it considerably easier to find relevant threads. I would like to see it done more often.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2019 01:03

It will never be over. There will be years and years of Brexit related horror.

It's a huge pity anyone feels they should hide it.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2019 01:09

Could 'World Cup' and 'Wimbledon' go into Telly Addicts?

They are seasonally relevant in the same way that the Eurovision is.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2019 01:10

I agree that moving threads to a more relevant board with or without the ok of the OP is a good idea.

SoupDragon · 29/05/2019 08:20

Not really because it was thread after thread full of fighting, whnging and other such bollocks. Rather like the Houses of Parliament.

MN isn't the only news source or place for discussion.

SoupDragon · 29/05/2019 08:31

I do think some niche topics are good to enable people to customise their MN view. World Cup is a prime example of something I was delighted to be able to hide. I don't think anything would be gained by merging topics like that.

There are definitely some where merging is a good thing - Arts and Crafts and Arts and crafts pictures is a prime example (I actually suggested that a few years ago now I think about it).

I'm not convinced the problem is too many topics - The main problem is that everyone sticks stuff in AIBU.

floraloctopus · 29/05/2019 08:41

Maybe mnhq should get rid of aibu ?

AuntieStella · 29/05/2019 08:53

"I'm not convinced the problem is too many topics - The main problem is that everyone sticks stuff in AIBU"

Exactly - that's why I think MNHQ should do a little more moving to the topics.

There are a handful of topics which were created specifically so they could be hidden. They can be very quiet between times, so they are falling foul of this kind of 'snapshot of numbers' cull (thinking primarily of The Royal Family topic - which was acclaimed by all sides because it was easily hidden by those who didn't like the deluge of threads, but all were easily found for those which did). MNHQ have however refuse to continue the previous policy of moving threads there. And now want to scrap it.

So I think there is perhaps,a wish to have just a handful of juggernaut topics.

The suggestion that a 'megathread' would replace a topic is also, to me at least, a strong indication that this is not being driven by someone with a real a real in derstanding of MN as a community with disctinct posting habits. Instead, it's just a numbers game.

The small, quiet, niche, valuable support topics are currently being gunned for too.

flowery · 29/05/2019 10:14

”They should change their policy and get shifting "for traffic" posts promptly to the right board.”

Absolutely this. AIBU is ludicrous.
