I have HAD to start using an adblocker due to the fact that my laptop is terrible and it took about 3 days to load the active page.

Just clocked my ad blocker notification thing and it's blocking TWENTY THREE adverts on one page. I mean, I get this brings in revenue and everything, but is that really necessary? 23?!

If ads on the App are here to stay, I'll have to delete it. It was the only reason to use it.

TimMumsnet · 08/09/2018 22:52

Hi guys, thanks for raising this.

You're correct, we rolled out the new standard of ads to all users on Friday because the Fairy sponsorship was for a limited period. There have always been ads in the app, but we've been really careful to ensure that they have a minimal impact on the usability of Talk.

Unfortunately adverts are essential, otherwise we'd need to consider options like charging our users, which we'd rather avoid.

I'll look into the gambling ads now.

Seen a dodgy ad? Screenshot and go menu > feedback. We regularly block ads that are misleading.

InfiniteCurve · 08/09/2018 23:02

I'd rather pay, though I realise I might be in the minority.
I don't want ads in the middle of my book,or in the middle of a song, and I don't want them in my MN chats either. The ones at the bottom are ok but the bars running through threads are dire. Sad

SophieofShepherdsBush · 08/09/2018 23:26

Something's changed; back to normal here. Thank you.

llangennith · 08/09/2018 23:44

Since yesterday I'm fed up beyond reason with seeing an advert for Boulders in Cardiff on every f•••ing thread. What's happened???

llangennith · 08/09/2018 23:46

And again on this thread. Please stop showing me this ad for Boulders!

itwillbealrightpromise · 09/09/2018 00:14

I don't mind the ads as such, but rather the quality of them. An ad for trainers, for example, doesn't offend me, but an ad for gambling/dating/teen pregnancy agony aunts (???) are at best bizarre and at worst worrying.

GinandGingerBeer · 09/09/2018 09:19

On the App, there's an ad now after every 6 posts. It makes it really distracting and disjointed. It's far too many @MNHQ

Thewhothewhatnow · 09/09/2018 10:16

The adds are far too frequent and are significantly slowing down my iPad. Can anything be done about this?

TeddyIsaHe · 09/09/2018 11:04

Thewho the only thing I've found to work is Adblocker - you can download it in itunes store (it's free) and it guides you through setup. I'd rather not have to block the ads as I'm aware this is how MN make their money, however, when there are so many on a page it makes the site unusable it kind of defeats the object!

I just got an ad for Stand Up Girl dot com, an American anti abortion site, on the iPad app.
Not too impressed!

BloomsButtons · 09/09/2018 19:00

I've just installed an adblocker as the ads were just awful. They were also, and I'm sorry if this sounds snobby, cheap and nasty.

BIWI · 09/09/2018 21:52

I've had adblocker installed for a long time now, because the ads on MN have been so intrusive it's spoilt my enjoyment of the site.

I've always felt bad about this as I know it's depriving MN of revenue, and as I think this place is brilliant and it's been part of my life for a long time now, I would like to feel that I'm making some kind of financial contribution.

Some time ago we had a thread about this, and about the introduction of a subscription-only option where you could choose to pay for an ad-free version of MN. It would be exactly the same content (obviously) just ad free.

MNHQ said they were investigating it, but nothing has been said about it since. Were we just being sold a false promise?

I would gladly pay a monthly fee to use the site if there weren't any ads.

InfiniteCurve · 09/09/2018 22:06

Yes,BIWI. Subscription to be ad free would be great. When I'm on MN I want to read, not look at pictures /ads,particularly the animated ones.
Please,MN,give us some other options?

BetterEatCheese · 09/09/2018 22:20

The ads on the app are horribly annoying! Keep accidentally clicking them which probably looks like they're working but I don't mean to! Thought I'd avoided them by using the app instead of the site

Zucker · 09/09/2018 22:45

The ads are making the app judder. After every 6 posts is annoying. If I didn't click through to join the crappy casino after the first 4 times, the 5th showing isnt going to be the charm Angry

bruffin · 10/09/2018 08:01

The ads at the bottom of the screen keeps opening. The Boots one is particularly snnoying

GinandGingerBeer · 10/09/2018 12:35

@MNHQ Ads every 6 posts on the App is driving me insane. I keep accidentally touching the ad as I scroll and they are the most awful shite. Last night it was all gruesome pictures of Japanese horror films.
I am bombarded with Swedish referendum ads today. Wtf is going on?

GinandGingerBeer · 10/09/2018 12:36

Does anyone know of an adblocker which will work on the App? Mines only works on safari.

TimMumsnet · 12/09/2018 16:42

Sorry for the delay @VioletCharlotte - we have blocked all gambling/casino games, so let us know if you see anything else like that.

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2018 20:54

I've stArted getting loads of ads on the app...the last one was in German...something about (stick on ?) ratings lasting 2 weeks. I have pierced ears and my German's obviously not that great, so it was wasted on me Confused

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2018 20:55

Earings, not ratings!

TimMumsnet · 17/09/2018 11:44

Hi guys, for those of you who are iOS Talk users - within the last week we've blocked a range of other advert categories that will help filter out some of the more 'spammy' adverts.

As I'm sure you're aware, adverts are an important part of keeping Mumsnet available to everyone. We're investigating ad-free options in the Talk app, but please let us know whenever you see ads that are concerning. Thanks for your patience!

bestbefore · 17/09/2018 16:29

@TimMumsnet - it still says sponsored by Fairy on the launch page for the IOs App

TimMumsnet · 17/09/2018 16:37

You're right @bestbefore - it technically isn't anymore but it takes another release to the App Store to remove. I'll make the change with another fix that's in the works.
