MNHQ here: removing the 90 day limit on _Chat threads

KateMumsnet · 17/08/2018 12:38

Hello all

Just a quick heads up that we're going to be removing the 90-day limit on the lifespan of threads started in the _Chat topic on Monday.

There are two reasons for this - firstly, people often don't clock that _Chat threads go pouf at a certain point; once they realise, they ask us to move their thread, and that can take a fair bit of time at our end.

The other is that, Mumsnet being the amazing resource that it is, MN _Chat threads show up in people's search results for anything and everything. When they click through, though, the thread's gone pouf - that's a pretty frustrating user experience and we'd really like to fix it.

Don't worry, though, if you don't want your thread to hang around - just post it in the 30 day's only topic, which does exactly what it says on the tin: posts go pouf after 30 days, and aren't crawled by Google at any point.

While everyone's getting used to it we're very happy to move threads out of _Chat and into 30 days' if you forget - so do give us a shout via contactus@ if that happens.

Cheers all,

MNHQ

@MNHQ on the Chat board it now says that posts started after 09/11/18 will not be deleted. Can I check that this means 9 November or have your computers gone all American on us and you actually mean 11 September? I’ve been caught out by that before...

DramaAlpaca · 05/09/2018 21:45

I've been wondering the same thing.

I'm assuming you are using the US style of writing dates, but would appreciate if you would please clarify for us MNHQ as it's confusing.

AuntieStella · 05/09/2018 22:38

Please don't use non-British ways if writing dates!

And rather than fiddle with chat, why not let it continue as the 90 day topic, and start a new topic for permanent chat?

EBearhug · 05/09/2018 22:51

At work, I always write the date as a word. There have been too many confusion's about date's when using just numbers. It removes any ambiguity to put 5 Sep rather than 5/9.

Jux · 06/09/2018 03:25

Poof! in that context, I think; I believe the exclamation mark is mandatory Wink

Whoops. Apologies for any ambiguity - that should read, posts started after 9th November will not be deleted.

SmilingButClueless · 07/09/2018 21:10

Thanks @MichaelMumsnet - that clears it up!

DadDadDad · 04/01/2019 14:47

Well, here's a twist.

If you've been following this riveting saga, you would expect threads started in Chat before 9th November 2018 will be deleted after 90 days. However, I see that Chat's last page shows threads started 11th August 2018, which is over 140 days ago!

I suspect that MNHQ has made exactly the type of error described by Smiling and confused 8/11/2018 with 11/8/2018 due to American date format... Hmm

PanPanPanPing · 04/01/2019 15:26

Well spotted, DadDad, it never occurred to me to check back. What a mess then, MNHQ?

DadDadDad · 04/01/2019 15:33

I've reported my post to MNHQ so that they are aware. I think it should be easily fixed...

FoulMouthedMotherFigure · 04/01/2019 16:42

Thanks for flagging this up, DadDadDad.

Over to you, @MichaelMumsnet...

PanPanPanPing · 04/01/2019 16:51

I think we'll have to hold our breath to see what happens until next week now?!

DadDadDad · 24/01/2019 14:10

@PanPanPanPing - I've just re-read your last post, and now I'm worried you've died of asphyxiation.... Shock

Grin

Those August threads are still in Chat.

PanPanPanPing · 24/01/2019 15:03

I'm still here and still breathing, DadDadDad Grin

(Using a different NN currently! Always happy to return as one of my previous selves though!)
