Dear MNHQ - Can we have a Swearbox thread with the proceeds going to a jolly good cause?

why must you inflict your hollow ethics of the rest of us VVQV?

in response to o-fckn-riginal post

OliviaMumsnet · 25/05/2007 11:58

My personal (and in no way endorsed by MN Towers)response is and how would that work exactly?
But I will raise it at the next editorial meeting and get back to you.

wabbit · 25/05/2007 12:02

Can I just pay £50 now and swear freely for the rest of the year?

Ah ladies, I have it - you can only swear in languages other than English.

Merde!

(that's about the only one I know )

Oh! Salut!

Desiderata · 25/05/2007 12:05

It would be a cold day in hell before we could all agree on a charity.

So fuckityfuckitynono.

And I'm also skint enough already.

Piffle · 25/05/2007 12:05

3rd world debt could be wiped out...

RubberDuck · 25/05/2007 12:05

Would "twunt" count?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/05/2007 18:27

Hollow ethics suzy? Please explain...

Olivia, I dont know. I'm not suggesting that there should be a ban on swearing or else you pay a fine, or anything as serious as that.

But, I think those who are making a concerted effort not to swear its an incentive, and a bit of fun.

It would obv be a voluntary thing, although I would expect that folk could 'suggest' to others who have posted a swear word, that they ought to stick 50p or £1 in the MN swearbox.

Or, it could be that posters could push the ! button and report a swearing post and MNHQ could email the author to ask if they wish to donate to xxxxx charity.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 25/05/2007 18:33

If anybody suggests I would like to pay a fine because I have sworn I will get extremely cross

it would probably make me swear quite a lot, in fact

Desiderata · 25/05/2007 18:41

Ummmmm, VVVQV. I can't see it working. Really, I struggle enough to make ends meet as it is, and someone clicking an exclamation mark on me because I've said FUCK, and then someone asking me to donate a percentage of my meager income to absolve me, would be the shitty end of the stick.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/05/2007 18:48

Ummmmmmmmmmm you could always decline?

Hence my use of the word "voluntary"

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 25/05/2007 18:51

So is this right, you want MNHQ to email us if we swear, to ask us if we want to donate to a charity, or you want other posters, who see us swearing, to suggest that we do so? We can then decline because it is voluntary?

No I don't think it is a good idea.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/05/2007 19:09

Crikey franny, you make it sound so very complicated

OP posts:
Desiderata · 25/05/2007 19:50

I don't disagree with the basic premise, though. It's just the swear box.

Such a huge network ought to be able to raise tangible funds for charity by means of PayPal (or other). A 'Charity a Week', would be good; certain charities proposed by MN'ers, one decided upon for the week, and thereafter an active drive to donate.

But the thread should be separate from other threads, imo.

Sugarfree · 25/05/2007 20:18

Sounds like a slippery slope down to NM tbh.
Someone selfrighteously suggesting that I 'pay' for the occasional "shitdamn" would get right on my tits.Am I allowed to say tits?
Interested to read Custy's opinion on this.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/05/2007 20:22

custy would love the idea, im certain of it

Oh please don't, I will have to just set up a dd or something

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/05/2007 20:33

I think WTF could be excluded, because it is open to artistic interpretation....

But a £1 an expletive is reasonable. 50p a cunt though......

OP posts:
morningpaper · 25/05/2007 20:36

What about having a SWear Count thread once a month, where poeopl can serach their name against verious expletives and then we can decide what suitable "fines" should be?

Just as a bit o' fun
