noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Rachmumoftwo · 07/05/2007 21:49

I think MK is fab. She is funny and close to the bone at the same time. She writes women like us so well because she is a woman like us. I would love to see her on a MN chat.

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 21:50

she writes Too Many Jokes, i think. she could do with writing a story and then we'd be able to tell if she's a writer or not. and she really, really is chick lit. she practically invented it.

Enid · 07/05/2007 21:50

ergh Too Many Jokes

like Kathy Lette
boak

rowan1971 · 07/05/2007 21:51

Aitch, I agree - I'd like to see her write a proper book, but doubt that she will. She's on a mission to make chick-lit respectable. So we have to put up with the bits where she goes off on one about accessories.

dinny · 07/05/2007 21:52

really liked Rache's Holiday - tried to read another and got to page 15 only.

MamaG · 07/05/2007 21:52

but she's Good Quality chick lit

she's just a writer who happens to be female, why do we have to file them away as chicklit or whatever. we are our most harshest critics

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 22:23

no, she is not just a writer who happens to be female. she is the queen of something that the male-dominated publishing industry has called chick lit. ie, fluffy, gag-filled books about girls Who Don't Fit In but find true love in the end. like jane austen, but with a zillionth of the talent.
and yes, enid, very like kethy lette. absolutely exhausting to read, you just want to go 'shutupshutuuuuup'.

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 22:25

and yes, mamag, as it happens she is regarded as good quality chick lit. my friend writes those books, btw, and another pal did the cover for MK's latest. they are not about the story, truthfully. you have to scan vogue magazine and try to work out what might be selling in two years. it's a different industry to a writer thinking up a fascinating character and wanting to write about him/her.

southeastastra · 07/05/2007 22:31

you sound a bit jaded aitch

TerribleMuriel · 07/05/2007 22:33

I am reading "Anyone out there" by MK and only cos someone bought it for my birthday. TBH it was painfully slow to get into and is dragging on and I would give up but I don't give up, which annoys me, but anyway... has anyone read this and thought WOW, is it me? It is mildy funny in places but perhaps just not my thing.

teanogue · 07/05/2007 22:33

She is incredibly witty, intelligent and charming

teanogue · 07/05/2007 22:34

not mad on her books but would be good for a chat

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 22:35

pmsl at 'jaded'. i am telling the truth, is that a problem? maybe i need to read more hackish low-brow escapist fiction so i can recover my joie de vivre? i might just stick with some Actual Literature, thanks.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 07/05/2007 22:37

I think she's funny too but I can't read her books. I'm not a funny book kind of person.

southeastastra · 07/05/2007 22:39

calm down, no offence intended, but what i've read of marian keyes and it isn't alot, has struck a chord with me. a similar soul that's all. it doesn't need to be analysed, it's just another's point of view

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 22:42

no no, i'm not analysing it or speculating at all. i'm telling you, Because I Know, how chick lit works and why it is defferent to other genres of fiction. so that we can establish that it's not a 'women hating women'/'our own harshest critics' thing.

madamenoir · 07/05/2007 22:53

I saw her once being interviewed on Hells Kitchen and, quite frankly, we wouldn't get a word in...now Rosie Boycott..she's lived an interesting life

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 22:55

i actually think she's a bit disappointing when interviewed, she just seems to get over-excited and witter a lot. hopefully that wouldn't happen online, iykwim?

southeastastra · 07/05/2007 22:57

ha that's why i like her

madamenoir · 07/05/2007 22:58

Marian or Rosie?

studentmum1 · 07/05/2007 23:08

i love marian keyes, i have read every single one of her books (fall back plan for dp on birthday presents!) loved every one and couldn't put them down till i'd finished, no book has ever made me laugh out loud the way hers do!

StyleCouncil · 08/05/2007 16:01

Hermykne - she lives in Dublin now but grew up in LImerick.

cupcakes · 09/05/2007 09:47

I've just finished Anybody Out There and thought it was very good. I didn't have any problem getting into it and devoured it every minute I could - even though dd2 not keen on being breastfed with me juggling book in one hand.
