We're still working out the nuts and bolts of how this will work, but we will be back, hopefully later today, with a cunning plan. There's certainly a list of names that have been registered and then never used, but there may also be scope for us to look into auctioning names that folks have hankered after... as long as the price is right of course

The difficulty with nicknames that have been used already is that obviously there are previous posts. And you don't really want to have a nickname with a posting history that's not your own - as said that would be confusing.
So what we think is that if you would really like a nickname and we find that it hasn't been used much - say only once or twice in March 2001 on the For Sale board - then we're happy to delete the previous posting history and transfer the nickname.
We'll publish a list of nicknames never used shortly (ie when Tech surfaces) and if the one you're desperate for isn't on the list you can let us know and we'll see if we can make it available.

Children, children, y'all is getting on me wick now. I can see we are going to have to ban nicknames with "mumsnet" in them (actually I thought we already had, must be something else not working right, chunter chunter...)

Or better still, with one flick of the switch we could freeze you naughty people (you know who you are) so you will forever have to be JustineRoberts etc - believe me it's no fun - so quick sticks, change back now (and do stop being silly!)
