What the hell is this? It's impossible to take a screenshot.

Doesn't look good, MNHQ Hmm

I'll need to use a second device to give you a pic.

Well this sucks....

AdalindSchade · 24/10/2017 04:27

I turned on ad blocker after they introduced the massive ads at the bottom of every thread on the mobile site. Can anyone tell me if they are still there?

lazydog · 24/10/2017 04:32

AdalindSchade Yup, they are.

AdalindSchade · 24/10/2017 04:40

Ah fuck that I'm keeping it on

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/10/2017 09:33

I'd rather pay £1 a week than have adverts

Me too. I understand that 'the internet' has to be paid for but I'm really sick of the intrusiveness now. The recent change to Mumsnet where well over half the screen is now adverts that just flash in and out is ridiculous.

The same for how you now can't browse a lot of online news sites without answering a survey.

If a subscription model came out where you paid a fixed fee for advert free internet access, I would be straight on it. I don't look at any of the adverts anyway and have probably never intentionally clicked on one or bought anything based on seeing an advert because 90% of them are so misleading that whatever they appear to be advertising is nothing of the sort when you look into it.

ToadTheVampireThreadKiller · 24/10/2017 09:49

I have just changed to a different ad blocker and the bloody thing is still slowing down the page, the whitelist message that is.

Stuff it, I am off.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 24/10/2017 09:52

I always use the mobile site on my desktop. Fewer adverts and none of those huge ones at the sides.

The problem for MN is that people say this but - in reality - they don't pay. Even huge media organisations like Murdoch's with lots of professionally written content struggle to make paywalls viable. There is no way that any general forum like MN would be able to do so, which is why there is no MN-like site that charges.

So I don't have a problem with the ads because I'd rather have MN than not have it. What I do hate is the toe-curling tweeness of 'keep the lights on' and MN's endless attempts to portray itself as a group of girlish amateurs in bobbly cardigans, running the site from Justine's garage. It's so fucking patronising - how stupid do you think we are?

SealSong · 24/10/2017 13:02

Yeah, enough with the twee girlishness. We are adults yanno.

AaaaaaaarrghmyGMumsnet · 24/10/2017 16:16

Hi everyone, thanks for all your input. There's a couple of threads running about this at the moment - Justine has posted over here about this issue www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/a3067667-Top-bar-advertising?msgid=72867355#72867355, please do head over and have a read.

callmeadoctor · 24/10/2017 17:10

Its only just started and is irritating me to hell!

CotswoldStrife · 25/10/2017 17:41

So I see the message has changed from the 'lights on' message to one that simply says 'advertisement' while the circle whirls round. Same pop up and same delay - in fact, my browser homepage has icons of the pages I visit most and the MN one has the message at the top of it!

CotswoldStrife · 25/10/2017 17:46

Not sure if this will post, I assume my thumbnail will change tomorrow!

NewPapaGuinea · 31/10/2017 18:14

The irony is that I've just installed an adblocker as the adverts were taking over half my laptop screen. They did reduce in size after a few seconds, but still very irritating. So if anyone from MNHQ is reading this, well done on forcing me to do the one thing you didn't want me to do.
