The point of it is if you don't want the world and everyone in it to see your picture, to protect anonymity, you can still allow those you know really well to see them.

Everyone can still see your profile, just not your pics. It does work. You can make it so no one can see or all MN members can see, or only your MNMates. And you can add to the list whomever you choose.
