Mumsnet local. I don't live where you tell me I live

It ain't local, accessible or relevant!

Is there a solution to that? Or do I have to suffer it like the issue that if you send post to the place the automated post fill in says we don't get it. Yes I live in the middle of nowhere but no, where you tell me is local is NOT local for me.

I live 2 miles away from my office but at home I'm in South Wales and in the office I'm in London. Maybe the solution is to stop mumsnetting at work? Grin

Just had a look at mine and it thinks I'm in Birmingham, which I visit quite frequently. However I live in Durham.

So, this still isn't fixed? I'm getting North London, Lancaster & Warwickshire at the moment. Not only are they nowhere near me, they are nowhere near each other either!

Hello everyone, thanks for all the feedback about this.

The widget is geotargeted so the threads it shows aren't related to which site you've set as your 'home' site - it's to do with your location at the time which is determined by the ISP you're using; we're afraid it's not something Mumsnet have control over.

We've a separate issue at the moment which means that if the widget can't pin down any IP location, then it'll just show you the most recent active Local Talk threads. We realise this isn't ideal, so this week we'll be testing a fix which means that, if the IP software can't determine your location, it won't show the widget at all.

The Local talk widget is a beta test and we'll be looking at ways we can improve it in the future, so all your feedback is really helpful, thank you! Keep it coming and we'll let you know about any further changes that we plan to make.

Today though, Dorset is randomly opening whilst I am reading threads in talk! I’m not even clicking on MN Local!

I assume that the widget is very confused about my IP, as it is suggesting posts about schools in Wimbledon; living in Chester; and a shout-out to people in Derry/Coleraine....whilst I am about 4,500 miles away from any of those...

TBH, that makes it a complete waste of space. Mine rarely shows information that is actually local to me.

Today mine is giving me posts from places as far apart as Edinburgh and Sussex. And nowhere near me. In fact I've never seen anything within 100 miles of me.

It's just annoying me now. Get rid please.

I'm still supposedly in Belfast. Might I humbly suggest that the geotargeting is less than accurate? Most recent local talk threads would be way more useful as at least one of them might be from somewhere near me...

PS, if I put my IP into an IP location finder it comes up with somewhere that is about ten minutes drive away rather than across an actual sea.
