Hello everyone,

Have you found your new Local site yet? We've given all 170 of them a lick of paint, and we hope they'll really help to make parents lives easier (our mission, in case you didn't know Grin)

But we need your help! We're asking every MNer to nip over to their Local talk board and help a local parent out. Share your hard-won local knowledge on a thread - or ask your own question about what's going on near you: local schools, clubs, businesses - anything and everything local! The more bustling the Talk boards, the more useful they'll be - prizes to be won (including our exclusive MNHQ mugs usually available only to slebs etc!)

We're also on the lookout for a number of Local editors to keep Mumsnetters up to date about what's on in their area, on an ad revenue-share basis. Sound interesting? Ping us a mail on [email protected] and we can send you more info.

If you're already signed up to a Local site, you can see threads about your area in the 'Local' tab at the top of Active Conversations. If not, find your local Talk board via your Local site.

Cheers all! As ever, it's a work in progress and we're keen to know what you think - let us know in the thread below.

As for the problem of a lack of usernames due to frequent name changes, couldn't you just make any name available again that hasn't been used for a period of time - say 2 years?

Shinesun09 · 11/07/2017 19:36

Mine is full of people who are moving to my area and want advice on schools and best areas to live. ...which is always answered with the exact same villages and schools sigh.
I will pop over and start a thread though and see how it goes

Shinesun09 · 11/07/2017 19:40

How do I changer my local NN?
It's currently different to my MN but my local NN is basically my actual name so would like to change it
Ive gone on my account and there's an option to change the MN but the NN isn't in any type of box to be able to edit it (if that makes sense)

Shinesun09 · 11/07/2017 19:44

Also I'm on Internet Explorer on my phone so clicked the little arrow in the top right and then to local but there's no option to start a thread?
I think my MN local is broke dammit I want a mug

Shinesun09 · 11/07/2017 19:49

I Google searched MN local and I can add a thread that way but only under my MN name not my local name and I dont want to out myself, it's too much faff to go to my account and have to keep name changing just to post in local
Sorry for the 4 messages in a row, can you tell I'm that person who sends 20 texts one after the other

FruBayerischOla · 11/07/2017 20:09

"Hi there, thanks for the feedback. Do you remember your Local username? If so you can just overwrite your MN NN with your Local NN when you create a new thread on local (and then same when you switch back to the main boards)."

Yes, I do, AmyGMumsnet. But surely the point was that it changed automatically .........

MayhemandMadness01 · 11/07/2017 20:13

Why is it Liverpool instead of Merseyside? Confused

ohlittlepea · 11/07/2017 22:00

Its clumsy how it works ar rhe mo to be honest, puts me off using my local site a bit.

paxillin · 11/07/2017 22:12

I wonder if most mnetters aren't here for local stuff. I have wonderful local RL networks for obvious stuff like events, babysitters, schools, local governance etc. I just don't use MN that way. I might have done in the baby/ toddler years, pre-RL network.

Just looked at my local page. Top 18 have no responses and I don't have anything to add to them, either.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 12/07/2017 00:53

My local site has very little activity and the activity it does have is centred around a very small but far more affluent area of the city that I don't live in. They have NCT groups and sensory sessions, we have a benefits advisor at the once weekly stay and play Hmm. I would have very little to contribute.

annoyedand · 12/07/2017 08:37

How do I find my
Local I am teeside ?

FruBayerischOla · 12/07/2017 10:31

It's here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/local_teesside, annoyedand.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 12/07/2017 14:22

My local site is dead as a doornail and anything that does crop up is aimed at 0-7yrs (at a stretch). Recommendations for soft play, coffee mornings, nurseries, primary schools etc. Not really ideal for me as a parent of older teens/young adults.

That's fine though, I don't use MN for that sort of thing. I like the idle chat about non-parent specific nonsense with people from all over the place. I suspect a lot of MN posters are like that. So, as well as access issues pointed out by techie types on the thread, I think there's also a huge demographic on MN that LocalTalk just doesn't appeal to (nothing wrong with that but it might help to explain low traffic).

HemiDemiSemiquaver · 12/07/2017 14:50

The link doesn't take me to the local board any more anyway, just to an error page.

And if it doesn't change my name automatically, no way will I be using it! I'll never remember to do it each time I post there, and I don't want it linked to my regular name - way too easy for people to figure out who I am if they have access to both of them. Nope, not worth the risk.

paxillin · 12/07/2017 14:56

I wonder if MN local would do better somewhere on the pregnancy and baby boards. Isolated new mums looking for similar seems to be the main topic anyway.

Parents of primary school aged children still usually live very local lives, but have RL networks via schools. Parents of teens and older stop living quite so local lives.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 12/07/2017 15:08

That's a good idea, pax

CatsInKilts · 12/07/2017 19:26

The local link is working for me either.

It just takes me to a message that says:

"Damn, we can't seem to find the page you were looking for. Sorry about that - we'll fix it as soon as we can. In the meantime, try these options:
Return to the homepage
Return to the Talk homepage"

CatsInKilts · 12/07/2017 19:28

isn't working... Blush

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 12/07/2017 22:01

Needs to be on the app I'm afraid!

mummabubs · 12/07/2017 22:34

Just checked this out after getting the email... turns out my local is also pretty dead, which surprises me slightly being the capital city of Wales! Also as others have said I only use the app so whilst I would love to be able to check out my local MN more there's no way I will as I only use the app.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/07/2017 22:59

Another who only uses the app (sorry.) if it's not on there, I'll never access it, though I'm perfectly willing and interested.

LornaMumsnet · 13/07/2017 11:27

Hi folks,

What is the link that's giving you the error message?
Any screenshots would be hugely appreciated!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2017 11:31

I get this when I cough on the "local" link that has the green thing by it. Up at the top next to Active

Come and spread the Mumsnet love locally!
HemiDemiSemiquaver · 13/07/2017 12:18

yep, that's the message I get. Clicking on local next to active. It's the link I always used to use.

LocalEditorNottingham · 13/07/2017 13:08

I get the same when clicking on that tab (and I'm definitely logged in to Local Wink )
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/$liu.PrimarySite.getTalkTopic().UrlFragment

If I go to 'Menu' and select 'Local' I'm taken straight to my chosen site.
