Can we have a vegan topic please? Or at the very least a 'Ethical aspects of diet' topic or some such.

Hi MN

As you'll no doubt have seen from the Simon Amstell thread, there are a lot of people on here who are interested in veganism. Therefore, please can we have our very own section/sub-section in Feed the World?

I would say it could just go under Food/recipes but discussions about veganism tend to range freely from the ethics of animal rearing to global food production to climate change, so it might not quite fit under recipes!

Maybe it could be broadened up to 'Ethical aspects of diet' or 'Diet and all it entails' or something, IDK.

Anyway, thanks Flowers

Seconded

WellErrr · 10/04/2017 10:43

Yes, PLEASE.

Then they can all go and preach sanctimonious twaddle to each other, instead of inflicting it on the masses.

WellErrr · 10/04/2017 10:44

However I strongly DISagree that the word 'ethical' should be in the title; being a vegan is no more ethically sound than eating any other diet in a conscientious manner.

trevortrevorslattery · 10/04/2017 10:45

Yes please I'd be interested in this. I am vegan-curious but the threads with information seem to end up with a few arguments from those who aren't Smile

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/04/2017 10:55

WellErr the proposed title doesn't actually say 'Vegans are the most ethical', you know - it simply says 'Ethical aspects of diet'. It doesn't specify which diet! I suggested that amendment precisely because of people like you.

Well you're kind of implying that by calling it 'Ethical Aspects of Food' but stating that it's for discussing veganism.

I'm guessing humane abattoir procedures and the Farm Assured scheme wouldn't be up for discussion?

If you want somewhere for discussing veganism then call it Veganism; not something that suggests you're so much more ethical than everyone else.

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/04/2017 11:16

I should have been clearer; my preference would be for a 'Vegan' topic, but I thought it might be more inclusive to have a general topic for the discussion of ethical aspects of diet. It wasn't intended to state 'My choice is better than yours'. Obviously I think it is, but that is only my opinion!

If you want to start a thread in an 'Ethical aspects of diet' topic on Human abattoir schemes, please do; I for one would find it interesting. I might not agree with it but I'd rather have accurate information than rumour and hearsay.

No, that would be a step too far Shock Grin

I might not agree with it but I'd rather have accurate information than rumour and hearsay.

My DH works closely with a few abattoirs and so I have quite a sound knowledge of how they actually operate. It was this that made me happy to start eating (only British) meat again after 17 years as a vegetarian.

If the topic happens, I'll happily start the thread! Smile

Exactly why there shouldn't be a designated topic. No need to reinforce that kind of opinion then let it loose.

claraschu · 10/04/2017 11:33

Don't most people think the choices they make are better than other possible choices?

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/04/2017 11:35

Good to know, WellErr!

Gamerchick oh come on.... surely everyone thinks that the choice they've made is the best one? That's why they've made the choice, after all Confused admittedly I did have my tongue in my cheek a little but I'm also being honest!

If you think eating meat is the best choice a person can make, then great - why don't you start a thread/topic about it? I won't get upset, I promise Wink

I'd like this too as I'm really interested in becoming vegan...just posted a thread about it in fact.

YES PLEASE!

Just a 'vegan' topic would be good.

Don't most people think the choices they make are better than other possible choices? Do most sensible people even think about it like that? I make choices that are best for me and/or my family, I don't suddenly decide that I'm making better choices than other people who don't choose the same as me...I do know people who do though and they are really annoying, they have an air of ''our way is best and all those who do not agree are losers at life''.

I'm not sure that everyone who is vegan does so for ethical reasons anyway, I have a few vegan curious friends who are interested purely for health reasons, but I guess it all helps.

PlymouthMaid1 · 10/04/2017 12:43

I would find that interesting too as trying to be increasingly vegan without scaring those I live with.

Maxwellthecat · 10/04/2017 12:43

I would like a vegan topic too!

reuset · 10/04/2017 15:03

Yes please!

Also adding interest for a vegan topic. There are a few of scattered vegan/vegetarian threads around lately, it would be great to have an area/topic for it all.

FlissMumsnet · 10/04/2017 16:09

Thanks for the suggestion folks, we'll certainly pass this on and see whether it's possible.

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/04/2017 16:49

Yayyyy thank you Fliss! Grin

There is an 'ethical living' topic in home & garden but a vegan topic would be great.

alltouchedout · 11/04/2017 08:55

That would be great. I'm really interested in becoming vegan and would love a topic like the one suggested.

5buttons · 11/04/2017 10:01

Great idea LeCountessa
Yes please, can we have this

Mrstumbletap · 11/04/2017 23:13

Yes please!! I was searching for a vegetarian/vegan topic thinking 'there must be one somewhere this is mumsnet!' Kept looking and then discovered there isn't one!

Crazy!

Come on mumsnet!!

Mrstumbletap · 14/04/2017 12:02

Have we got one yet?

HSMMaCM · 20/04/2017 08:10

I'm a vegetarian, but I'd happily read a vegan topic, because a lot of my meals are vegan.
