Not going to mention the particular topic which has sparked this idea, but....
Would it be possible for tech to build in a filter function into account settings so people could customise talk that way? So e.g. If you didn't want to read posts about roses, then you could type the word roses into the filter and all those posts would automatically be filtered out. People could still hide individual topics and threads if they wished, but equally they could filter out certain words or phrases for those topics which are posted all over the boards, and would mean that posters didn't have to hide them individually, they would just never appear, and mn hq wouldn't be asked to create new topics or to constantly be moving threads.
Another advantage would be that as the filter would work for words which appeared within threads it would also work for usernames so those who wanted to hide usernames could do so by filtering, and would also filter out posts which mentioned those usernames and therefore avoid disjointed threads too much.
