SLOW! It's so fucking slow now, I can't even get long threads to load any more

Let alone post on them.

It's beyond a joke now, vast swathes of MN are now totally inaccessible to me. Can we PLEASE sort this out?

Can we go through the normal techy walk so that we have some more information?

  1. Can you let us know which device you're using (mobile, pc, Mac, laptop, iPad etc)?
  2. If you're using a mobile, which one is it (Samsung, Blackberry, iPhone etc) ?
  3. What browser are you using (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google, Chrome etc)?
  4. Are you accessing Mumsnet via the main site, the mobile site or the app?

Hi all,

If your preferences are set to show 1000 messages per page then this will probably slow down the site. The larger the thread, the slower it will load, unfortunately.

Can we recommend switching it down to 50 or less?

Thanks so much for your patience on this.

Tech have been trying to replicate the issue - they've found that if you have it set to show 50 messages or less and paginate, the pages load very quickly. (Ads might take longer, but this doesn’t stop you from scrolling down and reading the posts)

However, they also found that if you have it set to show 1000 messages and you look at a long thread, then it's going to be slow - this is because you’re loading several megabytes onto a single page in your browser, which is an awful lot.

Could you also try using chrome, to see if this improves things?

Hi all,

Tech has confirmed that a few of you have not yet reduced your 'posts per page'.

You could benefit from doing this as with fewer posts, the page will load quicker, so please do give it a go!

Tech is (sadly) still struggling to replicate the problem here but are continuing to investigate as we speak.

We seriously appreciate all the time you're taking to help us figure this out and, as ever, will do our best to sort this. Please do hang in there (a big ask when the site is playing up, I know).

Right folks,

Tech have just spoken with one of our ads suppliers, they spotted a script that was causing a long load on threads when particular ads were shown.

Can anyone now see an improvement in load times?

Hey Guys,

We understand how frustrating this is, I have experienced this on my iphone too and it isn't great.
I have made a change, I can only do one at a time so I can eliminate but please let me know if you see any improvements.
If you had installed adblocker to get around this issue would you mind disabling it to see if the issue still persists? Your choice of course.
We are just trying to eliminate and I want to a) make sure it is ads and not something else causing the issue b) If it is ads then I need to find the partner in question.

I am just working through all partners but there is no logic right now, it is intermittent and I am thinking it is one specific partner causing this but finding this one culprit is hard, we are trying to recreate the issue here but sods law it is working ok at the moment, I am not confident the issue has gone away but please be assured we are treating it with great urgency.
Just to put it into context we directly work with 3 partners but they then reach out to hundreds...so that is the problem...
