Update on the Gina Ford legal situation

Hello all,
Some of you may have seen a Gina Ford interview in the Mail on Sunday today, in which she refers to the Mumsnet legal situation, so we thought it was only right to update you as to where we are.

We are due to go to mediation on March 7th. Our position with regard to this hasn't changed - since very early on in the dispute we have suggested mediation as a sensible way forward and so we are pleased to be meeting with Ms Ford and her lawyers on March 7th.

In the meantime GF has issued a claim form, which means that the court clock is now running and we have to put in our defence within 28 days.

Obviously, as Ms Ford has made clear by this action and by her statements in the Mail on Sunday if mediation fails, she intends to sue.

We're sorry that we are still having to ask you not to discuss Gina Ford or her methods but given the potential for something that may be used against Mumsnet to slip through, this probably remains the safest course of action.

We will, of course, keep you fully updated.

Probably best not to barricade anything on the 7th - we wouldn't like to do anything that might make mediation less likely to succeed. Though we'd rather you didn't discuss Gina Ford here, we don't see why folks shouldn't comment on the issue on the Daily Mail site, since they are inviting people to express their opinions on their article.

I sent a comment to that site but its only certain opinions they seem to publish

well, I tried to comment on the dm artacle, but they have one of those security code things which is completely inaccessible to me ... grrr

They are also editing posts if they contain comments that they deem to inflamatory or to anti-,certain person.

Xenia - that's not the law - I's what the law should be, and I think that that forms a large part of Mumsnet's lawyers argument. But under current UK case law the publisher is still liable for the views that they publish, regardless of whether they pre-monitor or not.

Seems very odd that there are lots of supportive messages on there, and not reflective from the number of messages supporting MN that I know have been posted. Hmmm!
