MN vs. other forums ?

LurkingHusband · 04/10/2016 13:37

OK I admit I've been around the clock a few times over the years, but is it just me that thinks Mumsnet is one of the worst forums around ?

No threaded view, and no ability to edit posts spring to mind. Plus maybe the ability to ignore posters.

What do other posters who use other forums (yes, they exist) think ?

OP posts:

I like MN well enough exactly as it is.

If I preferred features on other sites, then those are the ones I'd be hanging out on.

I don't expect everyone would like MN, but that doesn't mean MN should change.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 04/10/2016 18:09

How rude.

OlennasWimple · 04/10/2016 18:16

I would like the ability to see all the OP's posts more easily. Highlighting is helpful to a degree, but in long, fast moving threads it's easy to miss them. Something like "Only view OP's posts" would be great

KanyesVest · 04/10/2016 18:34

I'd like a proper search function. I use the mobile site on my phone and AS is really crap. Other than that, I'm happy.

KanyesVest · 04/10/2016 18:36

Oh, actually one other thing. If MNHQ comments on a thread, the "jump to" feature only brings you to their first comment. It should jump to the next as it's hit. IMO.

WaitrosePigeon · 04/10/2016 21:00

I like Mumsnet exactly how it is and don't want it to change.

If it's one of the 'worst' forums around what are you on it? Bugger off to be honest.

DramaAlpaca · 04/10/2016 21:10

I'm very happy with MN the way it is on the whole, but I would like a better search function.

Busy77 · 04/10/2016 21:16

I use the app and really like it. It's clean and functional and so easy to navigate. I'd like a search function on there and maybe a poll yes no feature to vote on AIBU! I am sure that would be so easy to implement.

squoosh · 06/10/2016 13:39

It does look like its design hasn't been updated since 1998 but overall I have no problem with the functionality.

PacificDogwod · 06/10/2016 16:31

is it just me that thinks Mumsnet is one of the worst forums around ?

Yep.
Just you.

Other forums are available.

dobbythefuckingjizzelf · 06/10/2016 16:51

If you don't like it you could always try

Fucking off to the far side of fuck then fucking off some more

There are plenty of other forums around and I'm sure you won't be missed

squoosh · 06/10/2016 16:53

That's a bit harsh.

dobbythefuckingjizzelf · 06/10/2016 16:56

Should have had a smiley face after it but my fat fingers hit the post button before I realised it hadn't added it

johnthebaptiser · 06/10/2016 16:57

Threaded post would be the worst thing to happen to Mn. I hate it with a passion. It's what keeps me way for. Lost of forums. Grin

MaisieDotes · 06/10/2016 17:03

No to threaded view, I hate threaded view. I left Jezebel when they implemented that (100 years ago) and I used to love Jezebel.

Edit post? What for? Just write another post stating the correction or if it's a typo just leave it- everyone probably knows what you meant.

Like button- I used to think this was an ok idea but I've gone off it. I agree it's better to comment on agreement and add your own two cents, even if it's just a Grin

imwithspud · 06/10/2016 17:05

I wouldn't mind a feature where you had a certain time limit in order to edit your posts, say 5 minutes after posting. Even after proof reading I sometimes find a mistake somewhere in my post or i didn't word something as eloquently as I'd have liked.

I've been a part of many forums where you can edit posts and it's never caused any of the problems mentioned up thread.

Overall I really like mn though, got no plans to leave any time soon.

scaredofthecity · 06/10/2016 17:09

I like it just the way it is thank you.

MaisieDotes · 06/10/2016 17:12

Actually a timed edit function would be good spud

paxillin · 06/10/2016 17:18

Timed edit would be problematic. People could use it to out old poster names, insult and goad. 5 minutes later delete the name outing, change cunt to insecure and tone down the goady comments. But 5 minutes in a fast moving thread is a long time, lots of posters could see it.

I much prefer the typos and autocorrect.

imwithspud · 06/10/2016 17:27

I can't say I've ever seen that happen in the 10 years+ I've been using Internet forums most of which have had an editing function of some sort, but I guess I see your point.

ghostspirit · 06/10/2016 17:32

I really like mn. I feel a bit iffy about how easy it is to name change. I do think it's a good thing that it can be done if used in a positive way so maybe the op can't get identified. But also I think it can be used to be pretty nasty to other posters.

GipsyHill · 06/10/2016 17:46

I think a time-sensitive edit function would be ok- possibly with an option to view the post in its pre-edited state to avoid posters abusing it as pax said.

However I think we manage fine here without it- I like the simplicity on here. I'd get pissed off with like buttons, polls and threaded views.

WickerLoveHearts · 06/10/2016 17:53

If there was a function to view the original, unedited post it would stop that as there would be no hiding what was said, because would still be in the background. It's a feature on Facebook where there is a small hyperlink which says 'edited'. Once clicked on you can see the orginal message alongside the new.

ClashCityRocker · 06/10/2016 17:54

I find MN by far the easiest forum to read and navigate,

With the pace it moves at, threaded views would be really messy and we'd end up with a million threads within a thread.

I can't think of any forum overhauls that have been successful, most have been fairly disastrous. With the number of people who post and lurk, they must be doing something right.

PacificDogwod · 06/10/2016 20:48

Much as I don't want 'Like' buttons or editing or no NCing, I can see why others would and I am fairly easy-osey if any of those were to be changed.
But threaded views are an utter night mare for clarity and ease of reading a narrative, so that's a big fat NO from me to that one Grin

So, Lurking, are you still around or have you moved on to a better more superior forum?
