Seriously, we need to do something about this.
It makes it so hard to follow threads when a number of people are called a user blah blah blah.

Really wips?
It is simply about politeness... isn't it?
In normal communication knowing someone's name helps build relationships and community... to keep anonymity MN has the same but with pseudonyms, you still get a quasi-community feeling... 100s of users with confusing and apparently similar names breaks down that feeling of community.

MNHQ shouldn't have any issues in resolving this, it just needs them to want to! Grin

It is getting to me.
I have ignored User147......... s for months. But now they are getting to me. I've managed to piss off a couple of them in one thread by suggesting they name change.
I am going to have to go back to ignoring them.

BeMorePanda · 19/10/2016 21:57

I've seen so many horrendous posts from user5368432 nn's lately.

Please can there be a blanket ban on posting until you get yourself a proper nn.

Come on HQ - you've been going to address this for ages now.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2016 22:12

I was 'off air' when the usernnnnn thing started - I dont understand the whys and wherefores. If its something to do with limitations of app, why cant people just use a browser to register with a proper name?

Boogers · 19/10/2016 22:24

wips did you see what akkakk did there? They emboldened your username so's you know they were talking to you. If your username is user356908633689754314689 it's much harder to direct a reply to a specific post, especially on the mobile site.

It's nothing to do with a cool girl's club and everything to do with flowing conversation. If there are several 'user' names on a thread and you want to comment on a specific post it's not always as simple as copying and pasting the text if you use the mobile site. You read the thread and identify the post you want to reply to (hopefully not on page 7 of 32!) and you put * * around the usually shortened username.

Not everyone uses the desktop site and the 'user' users are bloody annoying when there's a good debate going on. I agree that user12345680976544 etc shouldn't be able to post until they've changed their name.

ProjectGainsborough · 19/10/2016 22:31

What Errol said. Where did this all come from? I sort of thought it was just one, prolific, faintly contentious poster.

BeMorePanda · 19/10/2016 22:38

I thought that for ages too.

It's to do with people joining via the Ap or mobile site and being given a temporary name by mn.

Fine - just don't let them post until they change it.

ProjectGainsborough · 19/10/2016 22:40

Thanks Panda

user1474907171 · 20/10/2016 01:58

I am not keen on it either, however I have left MN twice due to various hacking and rejoined with a new name each time. I wasn't going to bother again but then saw a thread with a subject close to my heart so I signed up for a third attempt.

I looked at changing my name but haven't chosen one yet. In the meantime I suppose I will be mostly ignored, but then that was the case before, when I did have a name so wonder if there is any point.

BeMorePanda · 20/10/2016 11:13

who are you?

Grin
BeMorePanda · 20/10/2016 11:14

just pick any bloody name (or AnyBloodyName) - it doesn't have to be perfect and it's not permanent. You can change it at any time.

previously1474907171 · 20/10/2016 14:28

I changed after my previous post Grin. I had been put off by being asked to input my first name before I could make any changes as it wasn't immediately clear how much more info I would have to enter before I was allowed to change anything.

I think the multiple hackings may have had this effect on other people too. I know you can enter fake details, it just makes things more complicated.

BeMorePanda · 20/10/2016 14:39

YAY!

So AnyBloodyName is still free is any more User's are reading.

previously1474907171 · 20/10/2016 14:54

Maybe AnyBloodyUser is also free.

Pestilence13610 · 20/10/2016 18:01

previously thank you

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/10/2016 18:21

Surely if MN has put in a system that autogenerates user18473939273. they can instead put in a system that generates a name for someone

Pestilence13610 · 20/10/2016 20:19

itsall like off the shelf company names Grin

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 20/10/2016 20:36

I think they did start off with random words, but there were taste and decency issues or inappropriateness or something (although I fail to see how anything could be too inappropriate for MN names Wink).

ErrolTheDragon · 20/10/2016 21:09

Maybe the autogenerated names were too bland. Grin
