Your thoughts on Heelys needed for BBC breakfast - are they a danger?

Hello,
What's your view of Heelys? They've recently been labelled the most dangerous toy by a consumer group - read about it here - and I'm going on BBC breakfast tomorrow to give the Mumsnet view. Are they dangerous, should they come with a health warning, a public menace or is a risk of injury just part of growing up? Be very grateful for your thoughts...
Thanks

saw a tv commerical with some 'strap-on' heelies that you could put on any shoe for £20

that's when DS (6) saw them for the first time and went 'wow cool, can I have some'

um NO

misdee · 30/01/2007 21:15

can you go backwards on heelys? and do tricks?

pointydog · 30/01/2007 21:16

I've got strap-ons. Wanna see my tricks?

pinkbubble · 30/01/2007 21:17

Yes but great fun, my 2DDs have had them since Xmas and loved them. If we didnt do anything because it was dangerous we would lead a very sheltered and boring life possibly not even daring to go out the front door in the morning just incase we got hit by a car!! IMO they are no worse than bicycles, rollerblades/skates and scooters.

chocolatebirdy · 30/01/2007 21:19

Danger to me when kids go flying past me in woolworths wearing them! But other than that i cxant say as wouldnt let dd have any, she is clumsy enough as it is without the aid of them! Also bloomin pricey!!

janeite · 30/01/2007 21:19

Awww thanks Pointydog; was feeling a bit "???!!!" for a moment. That was really sweet of you.

Mercy · 30/01/2007 21:19

I remember clackers! But they were at least cheap (probably)

dd (Year 1) has a classmate who has a pair of heelys. £60 for a 6 year old?

No chance.

TheOriginalXENA · 30/01/2007 21:27

DS1 and DD1 got a pair from santa. (so its not down to me that they got them . Last summer DS1 put the baby bath on his skateboard and rolled himself down the little hill in the garden. Surprisingly the bath fell of the skateboard and DS split his head open on the fence -heelies thankfully don't go that fast.

wheresthehamster · 30/01/2007 21:39

I think lesser brands are a bit cheaper, I've been checking them out on ebay for dd3's birthday.

I'm sure some places are going to ban them soon e.g. yesterday at the radiology dept at the hospital a brother and sister were speeding around the corridors and in and out of the chairs in the waiting room. I think we were all hoping someone was going to say something before there was an accident.
(Although obviously in the right place if there was one).

mummydear · 30/01/2007 21:53

Been banned at our school and were only an infants !!

Nicely groomed Justine

Freckle · 31/01/2007 08:51

Report on the news today about a child being killed in East Sussex when hit by a car. Child was wearing Heelys. The implication was that the Heelys caused the accident. Don't have more details than that at the moment.

charliecat · 31/01/2007 10:19

is tis the news story here? or a different one?

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2007 10:49

Thank you for all your thoughts - I can confirm that Natascha K is indeed gorgeous.

I think that might be the story, but on the news this morning they said he'd died.

Gingerbear · 31/01/2007 11:48

Was it Natasia? I thought it was Kate 'Lips' Humbleton who was on Breakfast this morning with Dermot
