Daily Mail posting chunks of threads online- has this been agreed with MNHQ?

Can we have some clarification from MNHQ please on the legality of the Mail plundering MN and quoting posters? Is the Mail allowed to do this and are MN in agreement with it? Just asking as a thread from Chat has been lifted and is in the Mail with quotes from various posters.

It's legal - this is a public forum

It's more complicated than that. MNHQ own all of the site. If the Mail lifts copy from the site then they are in breach of copyright of the site, although all the posters still own their posts . This is all set out in the T&Cs link which is under the Privacy settings on your account details here.

It's really, really fucking annoying. Surely there's something MNHQ can do?

I suspect that there's already a loose 'understanding' which has been 'chatted through'. There are plenty of threads - real sensitive ones - which could be lifted or part lifted by a journalist which aren't.

What gets me in those articles is the way the 'journalist' patiently explains it all, despite showing screenshots of everything. It's almost as though they think DM readers are too stupid to understand it the first time.

It's starting to put me off posting, as I don't want comments in the DM in case I am outted in real life.

Some of the stories posted could cause huge problems in families or friendships if they are splashed all over the papers and people recognise themselves.

As all posts are freely available to read on-line, you don't even need to be a user to be able to read them, I'm not sure whether DM are in breach of anything....except journalistic ability!

I'd like to hear a response to this as well - MN.

I have had a few things lately which I could really do with some advice with from MN as I have no family or close enough friends to ask., I honestly wouldnt dream of posting for advice now after seeing all the articles in the DM. Its a shame really as I know MN users would be able to give me some good experienced advice.

This seems to come up a lot. MNHQ can't do anything about it. They have said so many times.

They put lots of threads on the MN Facebook page. MN is not a secret place on the internet it's public.

I'm not a daily mail reader Worra - I'm on today's thread and someone else said it had been lifted. Thanks for the link to that thread though, I only had a couple of secs earlier and couldn't find a MNHQ response immediately.

The Daily Mail are fucking cunts, yes.

But most of you don't understand copyright. In fairness, neither do I and I've done exams in it!

Short Answer: fair use, attributed. Shower your posts with four-letter words and DM insults if you don't want to be quoted.

Oh god yes, the DM swearword nicknames.

Like the DM isn't just going to blot the name out, as they do with all swearwords.

It doesn't stop them printing the post.

The most recent DM lift keeps referring to "another poster" or "a fellow mum" (vom).

I get that it is a public forum, but I don't know many people in real life who are on MN. However with MN posting on FB, and the DM quoting threads, it is bringing the threads to the attention of thousands of people who would not look at MN otherwise. presumably this is what MN wants, but it is off putting to people who used to think of MN as a place for advice and help, who now won't do that in case it ends up on FB or DM.
