Hey MNHQ. Would it be possible to have a discussion about how SN issues/threads are handled on the main boards. ( pt 2)

Hello
Just to let you know - with all the extra Brexit threads we still have a huge inbox, so sorry if we don't get back as quickly as we'd like.

We do have lots of us about this morning though.

DawnMumsnet · 26/06/2016 11:26

Was about to say the same thing, PresidentO, Smile

Also wanted to give a quick progress report to say we've mailed a number of posters whose comments on the LTB thread had been reported for being disablist (intentionally or unintentionally).

We've also received a couple of mails already in response to our post on that thread from people who've reconsidered their comments and realised that they may have come across the wrong way.

It's small progress, but a step in the right direction and we're going to try to keep posting on threads, keep sending mails out, and keep trying to hammer the message home that we won't tolerate disablist posts on Mumsnet.

Thanks for bearing with us. Flowers

Evening folks. We're so sorry we can't be on this thread as much as we'd like at the moment. We are still up to our armpits in Brexit here, but just wanted to pop by to let you know we've not forgotten you and we are still reading.

FICBIA - we're really sorry to hear you feel this way. We know it can feel like you're not being heard sometimes when things are very busy here. We have received your report about the 'beyond the pale' issue. We're sorry we haven't replied yet - we were hoping to have a discussion about it today but again it's been a very busy day elsewhere on the site and we do want to sit down and have a proper chat about it all rather than just dash off a response to you without thinking hard enough about it. We'll be in touch soon, we promise.

Thanks again to you all for your patience.

KatherineMumsnet · 28/06/2016 14:35

Hello folks, just dropping in to say that we are trying to keep on top of things. If we miss anything, please report and we will do our best to get to it as soon as we can.

ficbia, as we said in our mail to you, we are discussing our use of 'beyond the pale' and hope to have a clearer answer soon. Do bear with us, and rest assured it's not fallen off our radar.

Hi all

Just coming back on 'beyond the pale' in the Talk guidelines. As far as we can tell, it hasn't been brought to our attention before on MN, and it does seem as though, in current usage, the expression really has been detached from its 17C origins.

It's also unclear that its etymology, even when people are aware of it, is considered derogatory - certainly nowadays folk use it to mean 'gone too far' or 'stepped over the mark', where the pale indicates a line of some kind.

Of course if there's a lot of support across MN for changing it we'll happily review things - but we're going to leave it where it is for now.

Thanks all.

@MiffleTheIntrovert

I must confess I have been mainly lurking on cat related threads and generally posting minimally for the last few days, a) because I've been ill and b) it was all making me too Angry I have had very very high BP linked to illness, which is unusual for me and I am trying to be good Wink

I think MNHQ have put a few good messages up for deletions showing their support, but I don't think the two strikes and you're out policy is being applied. I've just reported a perfect (bad choice of word sorry) on a thread and asked the question so that will be interesting.

The problem is, even if people are banned it's so easy to re-reg which I guess MNHQ can't do much about - of course TSSDNCOP!

I still believe that the ease of NCing really doesn't help the situation and that NCing should be suspended for people deleted for hate speech. The username 484857585855 bollocks still appears to be going too...

Hope you are all having a good weekend folks.

Hi Miffle,

Hope you're on the mend now. Flowers

We've just replied to your report - please check your in-box to see if it's arrived - but we're happy to explain here too.

Essentially, what we've said is that we do have a two-strike rule (and have banned a number of posters already on the strength of this). But where a poster has posted twice in a short space of time (ie before we've had a chance to delete their message or post on the thread or send a mail about our rules on disablist posts) then we may, on occasion, give them the benefit of the doubt. Any further breaches would result in an instant ban though.

The poster in question has returned to the thread to apologise for her posts, which is a step in the right direction we think.

We're doing our best to get the message through and we do feel we're making progress here. Please continue to report any posts which you feel cross the line and we'll do our best to get to them as swiftly as possible.

Many thanks.

DawnMumsnet · 02/07/2016 16:41

Thanks for understanding, folks.

Miffle, sorry, forgot to answer a couple of other points in your post -

I still believe that the ease of NCing really doesn't help the situation and that NCing should be suspended for people deleted for hate speech. The username 484857585855 bollocks still appears to be going too...

We do now have the power to prevent people from name changing (oh yes!) and we've been using this where necessary. It definitely helps. Smile

As for the username1234567 malarkey, we're in the process of changing this as it's utterly confusing all round and very easy for the trolls to hide behind. We'll post more details as soon as we get the nod from our Tech team.

DawnMumsnet · 02/07/2016 17:34

@Samcro

Interesting So poster says sorry, then again post the same spiteful rubbish, What happens now

Oh no, really?

Thanks, Samcro. Taking a look now.

DawnMumsnet · 02/07/2016 17:56

Back again. We've zapped and banned.

AmyGMumsnet · 07/08/2016 09:03

Samcro - many apologies for the late reply. You can find a link to Sandy's blog here - assume that's the one you meant?
