Dealing with the trolls

Lots of people reported the most recent big troll thread, but it obviously trundled on for a while regardless - I presume while you were looking into it behind the scenes. How about a system whereby if you've received a certain amount of reports, the thread is automatically "paused"/locked/hidden while you investigate?

And if a thread is revealed to have been from a troll, delete it (with the message "Yawn" or similar), and keep it up for a day or two but hide it from everyone apart from those who were posting on it (op excluded, obviously), so that they can discuss it among themselves without their discussions being public. I'm sure the trolls get a kick out of being called a sick fucker as much as from the original deception; as it's an attention-seeking phenomenon, the less attention they get, the better, no?

I was one of the ones who signed in for "Oliver's army" not to rubberneck or anything but just to show a bit of solidarity to a mum who's was struggling. I've been here forever but my trolldar is definitely up shit creek.

I intended to go back on to suggest similar to a thread some years ago on here, when they were in hospital, everyone could send splodges of light from wherever they were and they could dot them on a map and see how far and wide the support was. I wasn't planning on anything financial, I thought it was a lovely thing on an old thread I remembered and if I recall correctly it offered a distraction at the time.
As it happened, the thread moved on and I got a bit overwhelmed with the sheer offerings so stopped reading it.
For me I feel a bit frustrated that I didn't pick up on it, but life will move on, I'll head back onto my usual hang out of Christmas and forget about it. What i hate about it is for posters which have lived this its just horrific to have people troll, especially when they've offered support themselves on the thread.

Not just the trolls but the GFs. Certain posters go around doing nothing but inciting bunfights

derxa · 08/06/2016 12:17

The photos were completely 'off' and weren't from the UK. The whole thing felt creepy.
I'm posting here to support MrsdeVere who as always is a beacon of strength. Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/06/2016 12:31

Derxa - why do you say the pics weren't from the uk?

MagicalMrsMistoffelees · 08/06/2016 12:33

Off topic slightly but...Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello has been going around my head on a permanent loop for the past few days and it's driving me up the bloody wall!!

derxa · 08/06/2016 12:42

It didn't look like an NHS hospital.

Hi, I feel really upset about this thread, I defended the OP as nievely I totally bought her story, I honestly couldn't believe that anyone could lie about something so awful. I feel ashamed for defending her and I apologise to those that were in fact right about her.

I will be watching in future to see if any names I recognise are posting and steer clear if not. Is it a permitted to PM selected people who may be struggling themselves to advise of possible troll thread?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 08/06/2016 13:22

Of course, Donkey, there are those who would say neither Mamazon or DWP were trolls.

Semantics schemantics say I.

Alohamora · 08/06/2016 13:48

I see another thread with the title Oliver's Army' has just been deleted from chat Confused.

I have to agree with PP's that the frenzy of 'joining up' type comments made me feel uncomfortable. Posting on a forum isn't a competition after all.

I am uncomfortable with the blame being laid at the door of people who want to be supportive.

BatLetRat · 08/06/2016 14:19

Mamazon was a troll as was TDWP as was DaftPunk as was DizzyMare

And so on and so forth. It's anonymous forum and this very thread has popped up for the past decade that I've been here. All people can do is apply common sense and not get too involved

BatLetRat · 08/06/2016 14:20

Oh and mamazon. For example, is a real person. I know who she is. She just told massive lies on MN and posed as several different people on threads. She befriended people under two different names and eventually tripped herself up

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2016 14:21

You can be a real person as well as a troll.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2016 14:22

In fact trolls are real people

StopLookingAtMyAccount · 08/06/2016 14:25

The idea of banning all photos of children is a good, simple, easy to implement one.

Excellent idea.

derxa · 08/06/2016 14:34

People posted on the thread because they wanted to be kind.

BatLetRat · 08/06/2016 14:42

Of course. What I mean is, to this day she still has lots of MN pals who believe her stories. They were all untrue.

This has reminded me i havnt spoken to her in ages.
I have no idea if she trolled on mn. Have to say she did have wonderfull excuses when she couldn't make a meet up.
Wonder if se still reads mn

lougle · 08/06/2016 14:57

Of course trolls are real people Grin it would take a special kind of magic to have threads started by fake people. Trolls are real people who tell lies. Lots of people tell lies, though, so I suppose it's the kind of lie and the size of the lie that defines them as a troll?

Mummylin · 08/06/2016 14:58

I have never seen before that daftpunk was a troll. I know she had some strange ideas, but thought she had been banned for saying something offensive, not for being a troll.
