Update to Talk menu

As part of our ongoing design update we'll be making a change to the main menu on Talk. This change is already live on the homepage and we'll be rolling it out everywhere in the coming weeks.

A few people had problems with the colour of the dropdown before being too dark and disrupting the page so we've changed that in favour of a white background. We've also brought the Angels back in the dropdown and tidied up the font and spacing to bring everything together.

We've also made some small adjustments to the homepage and will be testing a static image alternative to the top carousel in the coming weeks.

As ever this is part of an ongoing process of tweaking and testing with the aim to make Mumsnet more consistent and more usable. Please do let us know if you have any thoughts or improvements you'd like to see.

I posted this on the thread specifically about the floaty bar

Why did you take away the floaty bar that had useful things on it and then create a new one that has nothing useful on it? Confused

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 09/06/2016 20:24

I really hate the floating taskbar. It doesn't seem to be consistent in when it appears and it makes it really obvious when browsing at work.

The page jumping is happening for me too - Chrome with adblocker.

differentnameforthis · 10/06/2016 12:51

another one here who hates the floating task bar. It's beyond annoying.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 13:16

I have jumping too. I don't understand why so many of us seem to have it yet you can't replicate it? Seems odd.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 13:18

And it doesn't matter if I scroll. It happens whether I scroll or not. I have checked.

KatherineMumsnet · 10/06/2016 15:28

Right, we collared tech and this is what they said about the jumping around issue:

They tried to replicate this across a range of devices with Ad Blocker installed, and without.

When they were on a talk topic and initially started to scroll up and down the page, if they refreshed that page, it would jump to the top at begin with and then it would automatically jump/move back down to the previous position they were on the page before they refreshed. (If that makes any sense?!)

The way this works is just standard behaviour on the main web browsers on mobile or desktop, so not specific to Mumsnet.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 16:35

That isn't the problem people are having though.

What happens is. I load a page. Don't scroll. When the page first loads there's about an inch of white space at the top above the menu and MN logo. If I have a fast connection which I do most days, after about 0.5 seconds the whole page then "jumps" as the white space doubles to about 2 inches. If my connection is slower then it takes longer, by which time I might have started to scroll.

I dunno what it is in pixels because I have a new monitor and haven't got used to it yet. (It happened on the old one too).

I'll see if I can do a screenshot because you can see the jump! Will show with adblock and without.

Oh hang on that was the wrong pair.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 16:40

OK try again. Pair #1 - active convos with adblock before and after.

You can see on the RHS one of the other elements hasn't loaded in yet on the pic with the smaller gap.

Pair #2 - with adblock paused. A normal sized ad shows, no jumping.

Pair #3 - adblock paused again. This time a larger sized ad loaded, pushing it down to the "jump" position. But again there was about half a second's delay.

Pair #1 is in backwards order but you get the gist.

KatherineMumsnet · 10/06/2016 17:09

Hi BertieBotts, thanks so much for this, we will go back to tech. We probably won't have more info from them before the weekend, but will keep you updated.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 17:19

Yep no worries - thought it might help clarify.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2016 17:20

If you need the full size screenshots let me know and I can email them.

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 11/06/2016 00:53

I've seen page jumping on other sites with banner ads, both with and without adblock. For me, it happens whenever I go to Active. There's a second or two lag while the page re-positions itself downwards, presumably as the banner ad loads. I don't see it on the mobile site.

If I had a choice between having page jumping or the floating toolbar, I would choose page jumping. The floating tool bar is hugely annoying, especially on a longer thread where you're scrolling up/down fairly quickly and it keeps appearing.
