I have young eyes, they are not protected

Would be one of the last things I'd worry about 'young eyes' seeing on mumsnet!

I bite my tongue on the whole trigger warning thing as although I think anything can be 'triggering' so it's like herding cats in a sense, I know it does help some people access MN and the support here that wouldn't otherwise.

But FFS. I love MN as it's a parenting forum where abusive relationships are called what they are, we discuss feminist issues, we are allowed to swear if we want and it's mostly self moderated with MN only stepping in when asked.

Which leads me to think someone reported that thread and MN agreed and stepped in.

Pro Tip: If you show your child an adult site they may well see adult content.

Of course someone reported it, OF COURSE they did. But we're fine with that, it's what we're here for.

Apologies if the 'young eyes' joke fell flat , but we've always tended to edit threads that declare Father Christmas to be a big fat fraud (or similar) just because of the nosey young readers who are known to hang around shoulders during the season of goodwill to all men and internet present ordering.

But Helen, surely that is one step away from banning swearing in titles, or in threads.
And avoiding any adult content at all, as a child could equally be looking over a shoulder at a thread rather than a list of thread titles...

so Mn are editing thread titles because of the mention of the fact that santa isn't real, yet I could post "my dh/parent/friend/ is a cunt," and said thread would be left to stand? Similarly we now have several users with the word fuck in their usernames and this is ok? Given that we're talking about what's ok for small eyes to read and all...

The fact that this is an adult site surely is a good indication that it may contain any number of content which is not suitable for small eyes.

The responsibility for them not reading it is down to the parents, not mn. Or can we start to have a blanket ban on swearing as well and can the sex topic be got rid of? no thought not.

Whoever reported it seriously needs to get a life, but mn really shouldn't be bowing down to these reports..

Helping to keep the secret of Father Christmas from prying young eyes is something we've always done and will probably always continue to do on Mumsnet.

There are edited threads every single year on this one subject, it's not doing anyone any harm and it doesn't mean that we are about to ban swearing or sex, fear not.

It's not exactly a hardship and it really really doesn't affect anyone who isn't a small believing child. What difference does it make to you if a thread title about Santa is amended? Absolutely none whatsoever. Get over it and, in your own words, get a life.

As long as there isn't an imminent ban on swearing I'm happy :) It just seems a little silly to expect MN to censor titles when really the onus is on parents to ensure online appropriateness.

Mind you, I probably shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. I have an 11yr old who still believes (SN) so I'm dreading disillusioning him...but I don't want him to be teased at school

I agree with Soupdragon. We don't do Santa or Father Christmas but if someone enjoys it and it's important to them it's no skin off my nose if mumsnet edit it.
