Please give an automatic ban to trollhunters

There's some appalling troll hunting tonight on a DV thread. If the only consequence of troll hunting is a deleted post people will carry on doing it. Instead of the ubiquitous "please read our guidelines..." Type message I would like to see "This poster is now under a one week suspension for troll hunting" .

We know some women live in situations that are so extreme they are hard to believe - surely MN should err on the side of believing?

OP posts:
Whoknewitcouldbeso · 26/10/2015 09:47

MNHQ pulled the thread suspecting the posted was no genuine. TAATs are not allowed on the forum however a TAAT was then started where posters informed everyone that the poster was a troll and then the commentary started saying some guessed all along, others were shocked, many were disgusted. The OP was pulled apart and to my mind it was not up to regular posters on this forum to do that. Which is I assume why TAATs are not allowed in the first place.

Yes indeed Usual. A particularly horrible troll comes to mind who had a subsequent tragedy. Was told to sling her hook by HQ.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 26/10/2015 10:07

Indeed, the boy that cried wolf comes to mind.

Funny that.

so, all those disgusting troll hunters accusing an innocent ... ... oh, wait.... still want them banned though eh?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 26/10/2015 10:37

I expect the over investors will blame the troll hunters for poofing the thread Usual. Shooting the messenger etc.

Nothing new under the sun.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 26/10/2015 10:50

If they felt it was genuine they would have deleted the troll hunting threads and put warning posts in the thread. Not deleted the whoke thread.

HoneyDragon · 26/10/2015 10:53

It's a chat forum and parenting web site.

In simple terms it doesn't matter if the op is genuine or not.

Or what the rules are on the site.

Because there aren't enough MNHQers to do anything.... Hence this place is a fucking party house for trolls.

I can't see the need to call troll on any thread when there's the 'report' button?
HQ do not allow troll hunting on threads ( afaik? ) so it is technically breaking talk guidelines. If I suspect a thread is bullshit I walk away & don't get involved, I would never say anything because there's a slight chance I could be wrong?
Just report & let HQ decide.

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2015 11:09

Doesnt look like Night watch were alerted. That's what it's there for. Only problem with Nightwatch is that it's there for all to see so could that be changed?

But usual, it's not your job to decide who's a troll & who isn't, of course you can decide that in your own head but to publicly announce it is wrong. There are things that have happened in my life that if I posted on here no one would believe, because we don't all live simple carefree lives.
Just report threads you think are suspicious & leave it there.
That's what I'd do anyway.

SecretSpy · 26/10/2015 11:18

Nightwatch members get emailed if a poster or a thread is reported a lot.

I don't know how many reports are needed to trigger it. But I don't believe posting in the Nightwatch topic is the most effective way to flag a thread.

TheAnimatedRemainsOfMaryz · 26/10/2015 11:21

I'm really fed up with the "challenging a troll is dangerous because there is a 0000001% chance they are genuine and they will get upset".

Because the people who say that don't give a shiney shite about the thousands of people the trolls upset.

There were suggestions made on the thread Sparkling linked, and lots of suggestions on a couple of recent threads in site stuff, none of which mnhq have implemented.

So I can only conclude the mnhq don't mind trolling.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 26/10/2015 11:21

Or turn the other cheek and let the trolls get away with it. Yes, it's what I do most if the time, but it doesn't help genuine posters who get ignored by doubters and doesn't help protect vulnerable MNers from getting sucked in. There's no one perfect solution.

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2015 11:21

Nightwatch is basically a troll hunting thread. The trolls can see their thread being flagged up. Bit odd when you think about it.

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2015 11:22

Sorry topic rather than thread.

VulcanWoman · 26/10/2015 11:25

People just have to live and learn and hopefully wise up. There will always be people like this, it only takes a very small percent to fall for it to make it worthwhile unfortunately.
