The Good School Guide updated their Facebook page at 7 Wednesday evening to announce the 'sale' which suggests someone was working on this out of normal office hours. It's hard to imagine anyone from the company was thick enough to think spamming Mumsnet was an ok thing to do ?

I'd be less outraged if it was a phishing/cloning scam Shock Hmm

FFSYourself · 22/10/2015 01:08

reni good point.

I think the spam posts are genuinely from the Good School Guide - what an unprofessional bunch of wankers they must be! I can only imagine the idiot that instigated that marketing stunt went to a bad school and a really baf university to do a really bad marketing degree.

I'd sack someone if they did that in my company.

It's pathetic.

FFSYourself · 22/10/2015 01:14

Anyone care to spam post on the Twitter or Facebook page?

reni2 · 22/10/2015 01:22

That's one way, FFS. Or maybe mn should just invoice them the going rate for personally tailored ads to a well selected target audience. That would be 40 threads x 12 hours x however many people viewed.

FFSYourself · 22/10/2015 01:28

The chief editor is Ralph Lucas who is an old Etonian, Oxford bod and is now a Lord ? Bizarre?? Anyway his Twitter is mobile.twitter.com/lordlucascd

I'm sure he will be right on it Wink

reni2 · 22/10/2015 01:31

Maybe he says and peeps out there need the truth to make himself sound like one of us oiks?

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 22/10/2015 01:36

Peeps FFS. Perhaps they should put their marketing in the hands of someone who has actually left school.

PigletJohn · 22/10/2015 02:06

Why is he publishing a sort of trivago and not in Oily Dave's cabinet?

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 22/10/2015 02:46

I find it hard to believe that a reputable company would spam like this.

I hope MNHQ will get on to them in the morning, and get a proper response about whether they had anything to do with it, if it was a rogue staff member, or if they are under attack.

Feenie · 22/10/2015 07:04

Hear, hear.

I share the confusion - just how can a spammer destroy a board like that and it be allowed to stand all night?

OP posts:
Barbie1 · 22/10/2015 07:10

She try to derail my thread Sad

Feenie · 22/10/2015 07:14

How anyone with any sense can think derailing multiple threads is a good marketing strategy, I have no idea.

More have been hidden until MNHQ can 'look', but you've missed some, MNHQ.

FFSYourself · 22/10/2015 09:11

I hope MNHQ update us.

I'm interested and probably a bit nosy

reni2 · 22/10/2015 09:25

I'm interested to hear if I emailed a phisher or a real if amateurish marketing department of a company.

I doubt they can, otherwise they would have done that yesterday. Maybe changed the username to SPAM-findingschools or Astroturf-findingschools, too

DawnMumsnet · 22/10/2015 10:18

Morning all,

Thanks very much to everyone who reported these spam posts. We've banned that user now, of course, and are busy deleting all their posts.

Have you contacted GSG in search of a grovelling apology and damages MNHQ? I haven't got any response to my shouty email from them.

AnyoneButAndre · 22/10/2015 20:23

Oh, I take it back. I checked my other email account, which I sent it from, and got the following slightly grovelling response:

"Thank you for alerting The Good Schools Guide to this matter. We take being a good web citizen very seriously and are naturally concerned that this has happened. These posts were made as a result of over-enthusiasm and without going through our normal process. We are now sadder but wiser and have taken steps to make sure it will not happen again.

Please accept our apologies.

With best wishes,

Shari Lord"

FFSYourself · 22/10/2015 22:55

Anyone. At least that's a better reply than the last one. I'm still shocked that the company could have been that stupid but at least they apologised.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in their offices this morning.

I'd love to know how it came about. 'Over enthusiasm' seems a strange reason Grin Hmm I keep picturing a young super eager public school boy on a gap yah but I think that's me being guilty of stereotyping Blush

reni2 · 22/10/2015 23:05

I had the same email as Anyone. I imagine the possibilities:

  1. boss coming in, youngster, pleased as punch reporting "I have spread the word amongst peeps on mn". Boss sees 148 responses at 1am saying WTF and 4 new subscriptions as well as MNHQ's invoice for the ad...
  2. boss and only employee realising the shit has hit the fan thinking oh no, this one-man band has no scapegoat- oh well, invent office junior, at least 3 people paid up...
  3. either 1) or 2) but 759 new subscriptions and we will see a repeat.
