Dear MNHQ - has everyone 'won' an iPhone 6?

SandWitch, that used to be the case. But a few years ago MN started hosting ads from a company called AdChoice, which displays ads from a huge variety of companies. Some will be selected for you based on your interests/browsing history, some will be based on elements of your profile (e.g. google account, facebook), some based on geographical location and some just random or relevant to the whole site.

Since then MN has had far less control over ads shown on the site because they aren't vetting them beforehand, if that makes sense. They do have some control, if I've understood correctly, in that they can filter out certain keywords, some companies directly, etc. I understand that the value is that it takes less time to manage than individually approving each ad for use on the site, and the idea is that more individual ads feels more personal and relevant, but they are just horrible. Some are alright but I feel the quality in general of the adchoice ads is just low, they are tacky.

Complaints about these scammy, flashing ads have been going on since the new mobile site was launched many moons ago.

I've apparently won about a dozen Iphone 6s this week.

There are so many flashing/scrolling/moving ads recently. They are quite literally painful to have at the top of a small screen. Don't mind the ones that don't move but the moving ones hurt my eyes.

Still there. These have been appearing on and off for months now - please fix it mnhq

Thanks for the explanation Bertie. I feel a bit ridiculous now, as I think I'd assumed products advertised were not exactly endorsed by MN, but at least were not scams.
Perhaps there should be a big 'buyer beware' strap line somewhere!

It's still there. It's intensely irritating, I can't even read the thread because it's flashing away and hurting my eyes. Is there any update on this?

There's also a TalkTalk one that is annoying me with moving graphics if there's a hit list somewhere

But Sand, that is a reasonable assumption, especially if you'd been around years ago when MN regularly used to consult over which brands they allowed to advertise on the site. I realise the site is much bigger now, so it's probably not practical to do that any more, but long gone are the days when people got upset over McDonalds ads! :)

I looked it up and it was 2011! Which doesn't sound so long ago, but then I look at the date now...

Just to say it's still here (and driving me mad!!)

I am using the mobile site on my iPhone and typically win an iPhone when I go to 'Threads I'm On'. A blue banner, a fake Facebook 'f' and a flashing red thing on the R hand corner. Really bloody irritating , and between that and the Uber ad at the bottom , which takes you away from the Mn page and opens the Uber app at the slightest touch anywhere on the ad when you are scrolling up, it is all very grrrr making !

Ooh, and it's doing it now, at the top of this thread.....

And then I got the Error Code 4 screen, and when I refreshed all the icons on the bar at the bottom (the 'active', 'watching ' etc buttons) had been taken over by coloured icons that look as if they are from video games. It can only be got rid of by shutting the window down . I remember this happening ages ago when I once foolishly clicked on the 'win an iPhone' banner.
