Maybe I'm being blinded by the awkward forum navigation on MN (phpbb anyone? lol) but I can't see where new members can introduce themselves...
Is there anywhere?

As others have said, no need for introductions, unless you really want to, just jump in.
There is some info on getting started here , a list of the commonly used acronyms and just to keep you on the straight and narrow we have very few rules around these parts but we do ask MNetters to follow our Talk guidelines
Active is a good place to start or you can find a full list (make a cuppa, it's long!) of topics here.
